Suriya's retro gangster avatar from his next film with Karthik Subbaraj revealed; fans react

Director Karthik Subbaraj and actor Suriya have started filming their next project, the yet-to-be-titled ‘Suriya 44’. On June 2, both shared a video announcing the start of shoot. Fans were excited to see Suriya in a retro look.

‘Lights! Camera!! Action!!! #LoveLaughterWar #AKarthikSubbarajPadam Shoot in progress…’ wrote Suriya, sharing the video on X (formerly Twitter). Karthik revealed that it was the first shot he took for the film.

The video starts with Suriya sitting on a ledge, suitcases beside him, looking out at the sea with his back to the camera. As the camera zooms in, he turns, glares, and gives a sardonic laugh. He then beckons the camera closer with a menacing look. Suriya is dressed in a colourful striped shirt, sporting a long mullet and Fu Manchu-style facial hair.

Many users expressed that the actor has nailed it with the new look in the Karthik Subbaraj-starrer. One user commented, ‘Looks like #Suriya44 is a masterpiece in the making, evident in the first shot itself!’

Many users praised Suriya for his versatility and commended the Kanguva actor for fearlessly experimenting with new looks.

The other cast members

On Saturday, Karthik Subbaraj announced the cast of Suriya 44 on X. Pooja Hegde will play one of the leads, alongside Jayaram, Karuna Karan, and Joju George. The film features music by Santosh Narayanan and cinematography by Shreyaas Krishna.

The announcement poster shows a burning vintage car with a tree in the foreground carved with a heart and arrow. The tagline reads, ‘Love, laughter, war.’

Suriya’s upcoming work

Suriya is set to headline Siva’s Kanguva, where he will play a dual role. One of his characters is a ruthless warrior with long dreadlocks, kohl-lined eyes, and scars. Suriya will also make a cameo in Sudha Kongara’s Sarfira, starring Akshay Kumar.
