Mollywood #MeToo storm: Mohanlal quits as AMMA president, executive committee dissolved

Malayalam film industry veteran Mohanlal has resigned from the post of Association of Malayalam Movie Actors (AMMA) president after the massive storm of allegations against multiple members. Besides, the executive committee has been dissolved as many members face sexual misconduct allegations. A new committee will be formed after an election in two months.

AMMA executive committee has been facing severe criticism for failing to act on the findings of the Justice Hema committee report. For the unversed, Siddique and Baburaj who held the positions of general secretary and joint secretary respectively, have been accused of sexual misconduct. Siddique had quit following the allegations while Baburaj continues to hold the position.

The Justice Hema committee report mentions a powerful nexus in Malayalam film industry and a systematic sexual abuse of female actors. The report also points out ‘casting couch’ and incidents of exploitations of women at different levels in the Mollywood.

Actor Prithiviraj Sukumaran spoke out on the matter and admitted lapses on AMMA’s part. Several women including actors have been speaking out since the report came into public domain. However, the bigwigs of the industry like Mammootty and Mohanlal have maintained defeaning silence on the burning issue.
