Legal trouble for ‘Leo’ director Lokesh Kanagaraj, petition seeks his ‘psychological evaluation’

‘Leo’ director Lokesh Kanagaraj has found himself amid controversy. While the director has received great reviews and massive box office success, he has also received criticism for the portrayal of violence in his films. In the latest, a petition has been filed against Lokesh Kanagaraj over his film ‘Leo’s’ content in Madurai bench of the High Court.

The petitioner Raju Murugan has filed a plea, urging the court to order a psychological evaluation of the director. The petitioner has also asked for a ban on his movie ‘Leo’ citing excessive violence in the film, saying that his movie is inciting violence. The petition says that Leo features several scenes promoting violence including the use of weapons, drugs, religious symbols and violence against children and women.

The petition argued that movies like ‘Leo’ should be reviewed by the Censor Board in a more vigilant way. ‘Leo’ Director has been facing the ire for the portrayal of extreme violence in his films including ‘Leo’, ‘Vikram’ and ‘Kaithi’. When asked about the violence in his movies, the director had responded by saying that it is ‘fun’. He further defended his films by saying that he makes films for pure entertainment purpose.

This was the second film together for Lokesh and Thalapathy Vijay after ‘Master’. Lokesh Kanagaraj’s ‘Leo’ with Thalapathy Vijay in the lead was one of the highest grossing film of 2023, leaving behind several Bollywood films. The action thriller also has Trish, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Sarja in key roles.
