Thalapathy Vijay slams Centre; urges Tamil Nadu to not implement CAA

Tamil actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Thalapathy Vijay criticised the Narendra Modi-led Central government for implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Vijay released a statement on the microblogging site X, expressing that the implementation of the CAA is ‘not acceptable.’

‘It is not acceptable to implement any law like the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA) in an environment where all citizens of the country live with social harmony,’ a rough translation of his statement, which was released in Tamil, suggested.

He also requested the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that the law does not get implemented in Tamil Nadu.

‘The leaders should ensure that this law will not be implemented in Tamil Nadu,’ the statement added.

Besides Vijay, other opposition leaders have criticised the Centre for enacting the rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, accusing the BJP of attempting to divide society and create polarization before general elections.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin labeled it as a ‘divisive agenda’ of the BJP and stated that ‘people will teach them (BJP) a befitting lesson.’

When was CAA implemented

The CAA was enacted by the Centre, with rules being notified four years later after its passage in Parliament. It aimed to expedite citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
