Is South Korean govt looking for ‘The Next BTS’? ARMY outraged over official’s remarks

K-pop sensation BTS is on a hiatus amid their mandatory military service. In the meantime, the South Korean government is looking for ‘the next BTS’. According to the reports, the South Korean govt is working on a plan to establish a ‘K content Cultural Complex’ with a 5 trillion won initiative. The initiative is reportedly aimed to find ‘the next BTS’ and a ‘second Parasite’.

South Korean govt under fire

In the eye of the storm is a statement by South Korean First Vice Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Jeon Byeong Geuk. The minister referred to the band BTS as he announced plans to support the musicians. He was quoted as saying, “We will support the entire cycle of musician development for capable small and medium-sized agencies to discover the next BTS.” According to the report, the govt aims to reach a content export target of $ 25 billion by 2027.

BTS ARMY outraged over statement

The ‘K content Cultural Complex’ plan has invited the ire of BTS fans aka ARMY, especially the official’s comment referring to the K-pop group. Bangtan ARMY voiced their anger online with many stating that there cannot be ‘the next BTS’. On the other hand, many netizens and K-pop fans saw this as an insult to other K-pop groups as the statement pictures them as inferior.

The BTS impact

The seven-member boyband has a massive impact on South Korean tourism, culture and economy. BTS’ immense popularity has given an unprecedented boost to South Korea’s soft power. The Grammy-winning septet has been awarded ‘Order of Cultural Merit’ by the South Korean President.

BTS’ current activities

While Jin has recently completed his mandatory military service, the six other members are currently serving in the military. The group is likely to reconvene their activities by 2025.
BTS leader RM recently released his second album ‘Right Place Wrong Person’ which has been ruling the music charts. Jimin has also announced his second solo album ‘Muse’.
