‘Wicked’ trailer: Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo enchant with a world of witches | Watch

Following the years-long tradition, this Super Bowl introduced new releases and major announcements, including the first trailer for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's ‘Wicked’.

Directed by Jon M Chu, this two-part epic is based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’. Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz have written the screenplay of the movie, which also stars Michelle Yeoh in the lead role.

About the trailer

Once Ariana's Glinda the Good accepts Cynthia's Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, despite her green skin, the two form a closer bond.

Elphaba explains, ‘Something just takes over me, and when it does, bad things happen.’ Madame Morrible, portrayed by Michelle, advises her to harness her emotions, suggesting limitless potential.

The film's narrative predates Dorothy's Oz, aligning more with the Broadway musical and novel's storyline, focusing on the witches' origin.

In a pivotal scene, Elphaba asserts, ‘It's the Wizard who should be afraid of me,’ hinting at significant events to come, while the trailer briefly teases Dorothy's presence.

Jonathan Bailey portrays Fiyero Tigelaar, Ethan Slater stars as Boq, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz in the film. In the trailer, Jeff's Wizard remarks, ‘The best way to bring folks together is to give them a real good enemy,’ suggesting that Elphaba will serve as that antagonist.
