‘Vanishing Point’ star Barry Newman dies at 92

Barry Newman, who is best known for his role in the 1971 cult action thriller ‘Vanishing Point’, died on May 11. He was 92.

Newman’s wife Angela told The Hollywood Reporter that he died of natural causes at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Point.

Barry Newman was born in Boston on November 7, 1938. After attending Boston Latin School, he attended Brandeis University. He met Lee Strasberg during his education and became inspired to pursue acting.

Prior to acting, Newman was drafted into the army where he played both the clarinet and saxophone in the band. After serving in the army, he moved to New York to study acting with Strasberg. He starred in several Broadway shows including Mel Tolkin’s ‘Maybe Tuesday’ and Agatha Christie’s ‘The Mouse Trap’.

He then went on to star in feature films. Newman’s breakthrough role came in the 1970s ‘The Lawyer’. After a few years, he starred in the acclaimed television series ‘Petrocelli,’ which was developed around his performance in ‘The Lawyer.’

Newman was also part of other projects including ‘Fatal Vision,’ ‘King Crab,’ ‘Bowfinger’ and ‘Daylight.’

Barry Newman was diagnosed with vocal chord cancer in 2009, after which he had to limit his acting work. Newman appeared in the 2022 independent drama ‘Finding Hannah.’
