Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at her estate in Balmoral, Scotland, on September 8. During her nearly 70-year reign, she witnessed significant changes in society, her country, and the world. We have seen different portrayals of the Queen onscreen over the years, Let’s take a look at some brilliant depictions of her life on celluloid.

‘The Crown’

The Netflix royal drama showed how Queen Elizabeth took the throne in 1953 following the death of her father, King George VI. It highlights the political and personal events that shaped her reign. One of the most acclaimed series earned an Emmy for Claire Foy, who played the young Elizabeth, and Olivia Colman, who played her middle years.

‘The Queen’

Helen Mirren portrayed the role of Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film and won an Oscar for Best Actress in Leading Role. The film showed how the Queen dealt with a series of events following the death of Princess Diana, the former wife of her son Charles.

‘The King's Speech’

Freya Wilson portrayed the role of young Princess Elizabeth in the British historical drama, starring Colin Frith as King George VI. The film focused on the King’s challenge to overcome his stammering problem with the help of speech therapist Lionel Logue. The Queen was shown supporting her father through the experience. The film was crowned best picture of the year at the 83rd Academy Awards.

‘A Royal Night Out’

Sarah Gadon portrayed a young Princess Elizabeth. The film inspired by true events, recounts V.E. Day in London in 1945 and shows how the princess and her sister are permitted to partake in public celebrations leading them on to an adventurous night.
