Oscars 2024: 'Oppenheimer' show to 'Barbie' snub, key takeaways from the award show

The much-anticipated 96th Academy Awards took place at the renowned Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 11. The star-studded ceremony was attended by many A-listers, including Al Pacino, Ariana Grande, Lily Gladstone, Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, America Ferrera, Margot Robbie and others.

Contrary to the initial projections, it was not a 'Barbenheimer' clash at the Oscars 2024 as 'Oppenheimer', nominated in 13 categories, took home seven awards, while Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' was overlooked, securing just one win. However, in a heartwarming turn of affairs, actor-director duo Cillian Murphy and Christopher Nolan won their maiden Oscar for their magnum opus. Ryan Gosling, on the other hand, proved he's 'kenough' despite losing the 'Best Supporting Actor' title.

'Oppenheimer' dominates Award night

On expected lines, it was an 'Oppenheimer' show at the Oscars 2024 where Christopher Nolan's directorial bagged seven awards at the star-studded event. The biographical drama won Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. It also won Best Original Score and several technical awards.

'Barbie' snubbed by The Academy

Despite the film's critical acclaim and box office success, Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' faced Oscar snubs in major categories. Gerwig herself was not nominated in the Best Director category, while Margot Robbie was missing from Best Actress nominations. Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera were nominated in the supporting acting categories for their roles as Ken and Gloria but failed to register a victory. The film had bagged 9 nominations but secured only one win at the glittery night for Best Original Song for 'What Was I Made For?' by Billie Eilish and Finneas.

Christopher Nolan-Cillian Murphy win their first Oscar

Cillian Murphy jumped to act in 'Oppenheimer,' even before reading the script, and it turned out to be the best decision for him and Christopher Nolan as the duo won their first Academy Award honour for Best Actor and Best Director, respectively. It was Murphy's first Oscar nomination, while Nolan has previously recieved seven nods.

Ryan Gosling's infectious 'Kenergy'

Ryan Gosling lost the Oscar but won the night. From his hilarious banter with frenemy Emily Blunt to his epic performance of 'I'm Just Ken' in a hot pink suit, the 'Barbie' star channelled his Kenergy throughout the show.
