Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis detained in Italy over sexual assault charges

Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis was detained over allegations of sexual assault in Italy on Sunday, as per Italian news media, quoting local prosecutors.

According to news agency LaPresse, the written statement of prosecutors from Italian city Brindisi said that the allegations of a woman, who claimed to have been forced to have 'non-consensual' sexual relations for over two days, were being investigated.

Haggis' attorney Priya Chaudhry has said that the screenwriter-director is 'totally innocent' and they are willing to fully cooperate with the authorities so that the truth comes out.

In the a statement, investigators said woman was 'forced to seek medical care' after sexual relations with Haggis. They further said that the woman was left at the Brindisi airport in dangerous physical and psychological conditions.

Paul Haggis was expected to attend the 'Allora Fest' film festival in Italy on Tuesday.

He won an Oscar in 2006 for best original screenplay for 'Crash.'
