Johnny Depp receives $1 million settlement money from Amber Heard; here’s how he’s spending it

Hollywood star Johnny Depp has received $1 million settlement money from his former wife Amber Heard, closing out their Virginia defamation case after a year.

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor has reportedly decided to distribute portions of the settlement money to five different charities, with $200,000 going to each charity.

The charities selected by Depp range from those benefitting sick children to those that provide safe housing for different communities.

CNN quoted a source as saying that Johnny Depp has chosen five charities to donate the settlement funds, which include the Make-A-Film Foundation, The Painted Turtle, Red Feather, Marlon Brando’s Tetiaroa Society charity, and the Amazonia Fund Alliance.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard married in a secret ceremony at their Los Angeles home in 2015, after dating for several years.

Amber filed for divorce from Johnny on May 23, 2016. She alleged Johnny physically abused her during their relationship.

After her Washington Post op-ed, where she wrote about being a victim of domestic violence, Johnny filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Amber.

In June of 2022, Johnny won the trial and was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.

The punitive damages were later reduced to $350,000.

Amber Heard has now relocated to Spain.

Meanwhile, Johnny was recently at Cannes Film Festival 2023 for the screening of his film ‘Jeanne du Barry’.
