Jane Birkin, singer, actor and fashion inspiration, dies at 76

Singer-actor Jane Birkin has died at 76. She was well known for her personal and artistic relationship with songwriter Serge Gainsbourg.

Their songs notably included 'Je T'aime... moi non plus'. The duet was recorded in 1968 when they met on the set of Slogan.

The song was banned on radio in several countries and condemned by the Vatican due to its overtly sexual lyrics.

She also inspired Hermes Birkin handbag, which is popular around the world.

Jane began her acting career with minor roles in Michelangelo Antonioni's 'Blowup' (1966) and 'Kaleidoscope' (1966). She went on to appear in the Agatha Christie adaptations 'Death on the Nile' (1978) and 'Evil Under the Sun' (1982).

She starred in the miniseries 'Red Fox' in 1991 and in 1998, she starred in the American drama film 'A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries'. She also featured in the Academy Award-nominated short film 'La Femme et le TGV' in 2016.

French President Emmanuel Macron hailed Birkin as a 'complete artist'.
