James Gunn announces new title for ‘Superman: Legacy’ with 1st official DCU costume tease

James Gunn's Superman: Legacy has been given a new name. To mark Superman's birth, Gunn announced on Instagram that the DCU's inaugural film is now simply titled ‘Superman.’

The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ maker said, ‘When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.’

Gunn also shared a picture of the Superman emblem from the film, previously labeled with the Legacy subtitle. The emblem was shown covered in snow, potentially hinting at a scene set in The Fortress of Solitude, Superman's icy hideaway.

The title ‘Superman’ pays homage to the iconic 1978 film starring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel, directed by Richard Donner. The original film was known as ‘Superman: The Movie.’

The rebooted ‘Superman’ film will star David Corenswet as the titular hero and his alter ego, Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying his love interest and journalist, Lois Lane, of the Daily Planet. Nicholas Hoult will play the archenemy Lex Luthor. Originally titled ‘Superman: Legacy’, the movie is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025. This marks the first standalone Superman film in over a decade since Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, which starred Henry Cavill in the lead role.

The movie boasts a star-studded cast, including Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.

Gunn serves as both the writer and director of the film. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, he stated, ‘I completely relate to Superman because he's everything I am. He's somebody who is an outsider who feels like an alien, but also the ultimate insider, because he's Superman. And that's kind of like what I feel like.’

Superman will hit the big screens on July 11, 2025.
