Golden Globes 2024: Ali Wong is 1st actress of Asian descent to win in limited series/TV movie category

Ali Wong, the accomplished American stand-up comedian, actress, writer, producer, and director, has achieved a significant milestone by winning the 2024 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Limited Series for her portrayal of Amy Lau in the Netflix series 'Beef.'

In doing so, she has made history as the first actress of Asian descent to secure this award in the limited series/TV movie category, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

This achievement not only recognizes Ali Wong's exceptional talent but also marks a momentous step towards greater diversity and representation in the entertainment industry.

'Beef' is a comedy-drama television limited series that debuted in 2023 on Netflix. The series was created by Korean director Lee Sung Jin. It features Steven Yeun and Ali Wong in the lead roles, portraying the characters Danny Cho and Amy Lau. Their story begins with a road rage incident that escalates into a long-lasting feud. The show also includes supporting roles played by Patti Yasutake, Young Mazino, David Choe, and Joseph Lee.

Before her role in 'Beef,' Ali Wong had appeared in the romantic comedy 'Always Be My Maybe' and had lent her voice to animated comedies. However, 'Beef' marked her debut in more meaningful dramatic content, characterized by its darkly comedic twists and existential reflections.

Wong, who also served as an executive producer for the series, received widespread critical praise for her portrayal of Amy Lau. In 'Beef,' Amy is depicted as a tightly wound entrepreneur, wife, and mother whose underlying self-doubt and dissatisfaction fuel an escalating conflict with Steven Yeun's character, the unscrupulous contractor Danny. Her performance in 'Beef' earned her an Emmy nomination, highlighting her versatility as an actress.

Upon the announcement of her name, Wong kissed Bill Hader, whom she is currently dating, then took the stage and thanked her ex-husband, Justin Hakuta, during her brief remarks.

‘I really need to thank the father of my children and my best friend, Justin for all of your love and support. It's because of you that I'm able to be a working mother,’ she said.

The win makes Wong, whose parents are Chinese and Vietnamese, the first nominee and now winner of Asian descent in the category, which began in 1982.

Darren Criss was the first actor of Asian descent, male or female, to win a limited series lead with 2018's The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, while Yoko Shimada's win for best actress in a drama series (for Shogun) at the 1981 Golden Globes made her the first Asian actress to win in television, reported The Hollywood Reporter.
