Drugs, prostitution, abuse: Mariah Carey's traumatic relationship with late sister Alison Carey

In a tragic turn of events, Hollywood pop icon Mariah Carey lost her mother and sister, Patricia Carey and Alison Carey, respectively, on the same day. In a statement obtained by People, Mariah confirmed the grim news, expressing her profound sorrow over the grave loss.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, my sister lost her life on the same day,” she said in a statement. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.” Carey concluded by saying she appreciated “everyone’s love, support, and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

No other details, including Patricia and Alison's causes of death, were provided by the singer. The heartbreaking incident has once again shifted the focus on Mariah's tumultuous personal life, underlining the complex family dynamics of the celebrated singer. The five-time Grammy-winning artist has also chronicled her turbulent relationship with her late sister Alison in her memoir 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey'.

Mariah and her sister Alison had not been in touch for over two decades. Alison lived a life filled with struggles and atrocities, and her relationship with her singer-sister became increasingly strained over the years. In her memoir, Mariah emphasised that her attempts to connect with her sister while growing up consistently failed, leading to her victimisation.

“When I was 12 years old, my sister drugged me with Valium and offered me a pinky nail full of cocaine... and tried to sell me out to a pimp,” she wrote and added, "Something in me was arrested by all that trauma. That is why I often say, ‘I’m eternally 12.’ I am still struggling through that time."

Following Mariah's bombshell claims, Alison, who struggled with substance abuse, filed a $US1.25 million defamation lawsuit in the state Supreme Court in Manhattan. She accused her famous sister of attacking her, who was "penniless,” to sell books, highlighting that she was devastated by the “cruel and outrageous allegations.” In the filing, Alison also claimed that she had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression, “for which she sought professional therapy in an effort to cope with the horrific abuse.”

Alison filed a summon with a notice that contained the claims. Mariah demanded that her sister file a complaint that she could respond to and refused to address the defamation lawsuit. There has been no development since Mariah's request, leaving the legal battle between the two sisters unresolved.
