Cannes 2023: ‘The Idol’ gets five-minute standing ovation after premiere; watch

The new HBO series ‘The Idol’, starring Lily-Rose Depp and Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye, received a five-minute-long standing ovation after its world premiere at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival on Monday night.

Sam Levison’s series debuts next month. The ‘Euphoria’ creator, who co-created this show with Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, got emotional while addressing the crowd at the Grand Theatre Lumiere.

‘I am incredibly proud of this show, and I’m proud of the way we made this show. I feel like I gained a family .. I know that sounds a little culty but that’s the way it feels,’ he said. The nude scenes, bodily fluids and the explicit takedown of stardom in the show has left the critics scandalised. Weeknd, who is making his acting debut with this series, also was wiping away tears.

After having a nervous breakdown that caused the cancellation of her last tour, the aspiring pop star begins a complicated relationship with a self-help guru and the head of a contemporary cult.

‘The Idol’ is all set to stream on HBO from June 6.
