BTS to meet US President Joe Biden to discuss anti-Asian hate crimes

The popular South Korean music group BTS is all set to meet US President Joe Biden on May 31. The White House announced that the Grammy-nominated group will join Biden to discuss Asian inclusion and representation, and to address anti-Asian hate crimes and discrimination.

In Thursday’s announcement, the White House noted, ‘President Biden has previously spoken about his commitment to combating the surge of anti-Asian hate crimes and signed into law the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act in May 2021 to provide law enforcement with resources to identify, investigate, and report hate crimes and ensure that hate crimes information is more accessible to AA and NHPI communities.”

‘President Biden and BTS will also discuss the importance of diversity and inclusion and BTS’ platform as youth ambassadors who spread a message of hope and positivity across the world,’ the White House added.

The news comes days after Biden’s first presidential trip to Asia, which included a visit to Seoul and meetings with Yoon Suk Yeol, the newly elected South Korean President.
BTS’ popularity spans across the globe. They are best known for their songs ‘Butter’ and ‘Dynamite.’

In 2017, the K-pop band partnered with UNICEF to launch ‘Love Myself,’ an anti-violence campaign.
In September 2021, BTS addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as special presidential envoy for future generations from native South Korea. They also performed their English single, ‘Permission To Dance.’
