Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom claims No.1 position at North America box office. Deets inside

Warner Bros and DC's new venture 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom' has led a crowd of new releases at the box office on the weekend before this year's Christmas. The superhero sequel starring Jason Momoa earned an estimated $28.1 million in its first three days of release in 3,706 locations in North America, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Despite a rough ride from critics, the holiday entry is the No. 1 film of the weekend internationally and globally. In offshore markets, it ranked as the top Hollywood title of 2023.

Overall, 'Aquaman 2' performed best in Asia where it was the top Hollywood movie in every market. Singapore nabbed the biggest WB opening weekend of 2023, and in Malaysia and Indonesia, A2 was the 2nd biggest opening for a WB movie this year. In Taiwan, it was the biggest opening weekend for a superhero movie in 2023.

Meanwhile, Prabhas-starrer 'Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire' is looking at an estimated $37M global for its opening weekend. As per sources, the Prasanth Neel-directed actioner grossed $225K from 50 screens in India and the Middle East.

Its studio, Warner Bros. also has the No. 2 movie of the weekend, 'Wonka', and one of the major Christmas openings, 'The Color Purple', a buffet of big movies that was sorely needed by theaters, especially without any new movies from the Walt Disney Company or Paramount. By Monday, Warner Bros. will likely have three spots in the top five. Yorgos Lanthimos' gothic black comedy 'Poor Things' also expanded to 800 theaters where it earned $2.1 million.
