Angelina Jolie steps down as UN refugee agency envoy after 20 years

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is parting ways with the United Nations' refugee agency after almost two decades. In a joint statement, the actor and the agency announced that Jolie will be 'moving on' from her role as the special envoy to 'engage on a broader set of humanitarian and human rights issues.'

In the statement, Jolie said that she'll continue to do everything in her power to support refugees and other displaced people in the years to come. She added that it was time to 'work differently' by directly engaging with refugees and local organisations.

For the unversed, Angelina Jolie started working with the UN refugee agency in 2001 and was appointed as special envoy in 2012

Fillipo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for refugees, said that he supports Angelina's decision and he's certain that she will bring the same passion and attention to a wider humanitarian portfolio.

Angelina carried out over 60 field missions to bear witness to stories of sufferings as well as hope and resilience. She most recently travelled to Burkina Faso.
