74th Berlin International Film Festival: Martin Scorsese to receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese will receive the Honorary Golden Bear Lifetime Achievement Award at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival.

The festival will recognize Scorsese's outstanding contributions to cinema. The filmmaker will be honored in an award ceremony at Berlinale Palast on February 20, 2024.

Scorsese has helmed over 70 films including the latest 'Killers of the Flower Moon' which is a strong Oscar contender.

As a cinema lover, Scorsese has also championed the cause of film preservation. With The Film Foundation, he supports the restoration and distribution of classic films.

‘For anyone who considers cinema as the art of shaping a story in such a way that is both completely personal and universal, Martin Scorsese is an unmatched role model,’ said Berlin Film Festival co-directors Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian.

‘His films have accompanied our history as spectators and human beings, his characters have lived and grown within us, his view of history and mankind has helped us to understand and question who we are and where we come from,’ they added.

Martin Scorsese has visited Berlin multiple times in the past, bringing films like "Raging Bull," "Gangs of New York," and "Shutter Island," all of which were screened out of competition at the festival. He also presented "Cape Fear," which competed in the Berlinale in 1992.

Furthermore, his Rolling Stones concert film "Shine a Light" served as the opening night film for the 2008 Berlinale.

Additionally, Scorsese's HBO documentary "The 50 Year Argument" about the New York Review of Books was first presented as a work in progress in Berlin in 2014.

The 74th Berlin International Film Festival runs Feb. 15-25, 2024.
