Veteran Actor-Producer Dheeraj Kumar Passes Away at 79

Mumbai, July 15 (PTI) Veteran actor-producer Dheeraj Kumar, renowned for his roles in Manoj Kumar's "Roti Kapda Aur Makaan" and for producing popular television shows "Om Namah Shivay" and "Adalat," has passed away at 79. He died at a hospital in Mumbai, a family friend revealed on Tuesday.

Kumar was battling acute pneumonia and had been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.

Family friend and close associate Ajay Shukla stated, "He passed away this morning at 11:00 am due to pneumonia at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital." He noted that Kumar was unwell and had been admitted on Saturday following symptoms of fever, cold, and cough. His condition required ICU care due to his age.

The last rites for Kumar are scheduled to be held on Wednesday at the Pawan Hans Crematorium, Shukla confirmed.

Kumar's family also released a statement confirming the sad news, expressing, "With heartfelt sorrow, we announce the passing of veteran actor, producer, and director Dheeraj Kumar on Tuesday, 15th July 2025, around 12 noon, surrounded by family."

They added, "He was always laughing, always giving, and always present—for his family, friends, and the industry at large. A true gentleman, he was a father figure, friend, and guide to many." Dheeraj Kumar will be notably remembered not just as an actor, but as a mentor, a gentle soul, and a true gentleman. The family extended gratitude for all prayers and support during this challenging time.

Dheeraj Kumar enjoyed a career spanning over five decades, bridging both cinema and television.

His journey in the entertainment industry began as a finalist in a 1965 talent contest, which also included superstar Rajesh Khanna and filmmaker Subhash Ghai.

He embarked on an acting career in Hindi and Punjabi films, starting with the lead in the 1970 film "Raaton Ka Raja." He further contributed to supporting roles in films such as "Roti Kapada Aur Makaan" (1974), "Sargam" (1979), and "Kranti" (1981).

Within Punjabi cinema, Dheeraj Kumar was a formidable presence, featuring in over 20 films between 1970 and 1984.

In 1986, he founded Creative Eye Limited, a production house influential in the trajectory of Indian television. Under Kumar's visionary leadership, the company produced beloved mythological and family dramas like "Om Namah Shivay," which aired on Doordarshan National from 1997 to 2001, as well as productions like "Shree Ganesh," "Rishton Ke Bhanwar Mein Uljhi Niyati," "Adalat," and "Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann."
