‘Stree 2’: Shraddha Kapoor-Rajkummar Rao starrer becomes biggest opener with Rs 54.35 Cr on Day 1

Amar Kaushik's highly anticipated sequel, ‘Stree 2’, has made a strong debut at the box office, setting a new 2024 benchmark with an impressive opening day collection of ₹54.35 crore in India.

Released on Independence Day, the film not only surpassed expectations but also became the biggest opener of the year.

Starring Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Pankaj Tripathi, ‘Stree 2’ continues the success of its 2018 predecessor.

According to Sacnilk.com, the film earned ₹8 crore from special opening premieres on August 14, followed by a substantial ₹46 crore on its official release day. This combined total of ₹54.35 crore sets a new record, outpacing previous major releases like ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ and ‘Fighter’.

With an impressive 75.09 percent occupancy on its opening day, the film’s success underscores the lasting appeal of horror-comedies.

Additionally, it becomes the biggest opening for a Hindi film, following Shah Rukh Khan's ‘Jawan’ (₹65.5 crore) and ‘Pathaan’ (₹55 crore) from the previous year.

‘Stree 2’ sees Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor return to their roles from the original.

The sequel continues the tale of Chanderi, now haunted by the menacing Sarkata, with the townspeople once again seeking Stree's aid.

The film also features surprise cameos, including Varun Dhawan as Bhediya, who appears in a special song with Shraddha Kapoor. The advance bookings for ‘Stree 2’ were outstanding, with 392,000 tickets sold on its first day at national multiplexes, surpassing some of Bollywood’s biggest hits.

The film’s success is impressive given the stiff competition from Akshay Kumar and Taapsee Pannu’s ‘Khel Khel Mein’ and John Abraham’s ‘Vedaa’ on its opening day.

According to early estimates by Sacnilk, ‘Khel Khel Mein’ made just Rs 5 crore on day one, while ‘Vedaa’ scored ₹6.52 crore at the domestic box office.
