The 24th edition of the New York Indian Film Festival will be held between May 31 to June 2. The prestigious film festival will honour the veteran Indian film actor Shabana Azmi. Her 50-year journey in cinema will be celebrated at the event next month.

A special honour for Shabana Azmi

Shabana Azmi will mark fifty years in the film industry this year and the milestone will be celebrated at the international film festival. A special event will be hosted where her 1996 film ‘Fire’, directed by Deepa Mehta will be screened.

"Azmi's repertoire is a testament to her unparalleled skill and diverse roles. As Shabana Azmi continues to illuminate screens and stages alike with her presence, her legacy as a trailblazer in Indian cinema remains unparalleled," the NYIFF statement said.

Shabana Azmi also reacted to the news. A NYIFF statement quoted Azmi as saying, “I have been associated with the New York Indian Film Festival since its inception and I am heartened by the progress it has made over the years in leaps and bounds. I am happy that my 50th year is being celebrated at the NYIFF and I look forward to it.”

About the New York Indian Film Festival

The annual film fest celebrates films and documentaries from India. It is one of the longest-running Indian film festivals in North America. This year, the film festival will feature 49 narratives, documentaries and short films in 12 Indian languages.

About Shabana Azmi’s illustrious career

Azmi has starred in over 140 Hindi films and 12 international projects. The actor was last seen in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’. The 73-year-old actor has five National Film Awards and several other accolades to her credit.
