Officials from the Union Health Ministry, as reported by news agency PTI, have clarified that actor-model Poonam Pandey is not under consideration to be the brand ambassador for the government's national campaign aimed at raising awareness about cervical cancer.

The clarification followed reports suggesting that Poonam Pandey would be the spokesperson for the campaign. There were also rumours circulating that she and her team were in discussions with officials from the ministry.

How Poonam faked her death

Earlier this month, headlines were dominated by news of Poonam's supposed death from cervical cancer. However, it was later revealed that the news was fabricated and orchestrated by the actor and her team as a stunt to raise awareness about the disease.

In a video shared on her official Instagram page on February 3, Poonam addressed the issue, stating, ‘I feel compelled to share something significant with you all. I am alive. Cervical cancer didn't take my life, but unfortunately, it has claimed the lives of many women due to a lack of awareness about the disease.’

‘Unlike some other cancers, cervical cancer is entirely preventable. The key lies in the HPV vaccine and early detection tests. We have the means to ensure no one loses their life to this disease. Let's empower one another with critical awareness and ensure every woman is informed about the steps to take. Together, let's strive to put an end to the devastating impact of the disease and bring #DeathToCervicalCancer,’ she wrote.

Schbang's apology

Schbang, the media company responsible for orchestrating Poonam's fake death stunt, issued an apology after facing backlash for their campaign. In a statement posted on Instagram, the Mumbai-based company admitted their involvement in the hoax, which garnered widespread criticism from celebrities and the public alike.

While expressing regret to those affected by cancer, Schbang also asserted that their campaign had successfully raised awareness about the disease, despite its controversial nature.

‘Many of you may be unaware but Poonam's mother has bravely battled cancer. Having been through the challenges of battling a disease like this at such close personal quarters, she understands the importance of prevention and the criticality of awareness, especially when a vaccine is available,’ a part of its note read.
