'Laapataa Ladies' surpasses Ranbir Kapoor's 'Animal' viewership on Netflix within 2 months

The news of 'Laapataa Ladies' surpassing 'Animal' in viewership comes just weeks after a verbal spat between Kiran Rao and Sandeep Reddy Vanga.

'Laapataa Ladies' surpasses Ranbir Kapoor's 'Animal' viewership on Netflix within 2 months

‘Laapataa Ladies’, directed by Kiran Rao, has surpassed Ranbir Kapoor’s film ‘Animal’ in Netflix viewership within 2 months of its release. The comedy-drama, which premiered on Netflix in March 2024, achieved a notable milestone with 13.8 million views, surpassing ‘Animal’, which was released on January 26, 2024.

The news of ‘Laapataa Ladies’ outperforming ‘Animal’ quickly spread on social media.

A Reddit user expressed excitement about the film's success, urging others to watch the Kiran Rao directorial, noting its popularity in the UK and enthusiastic reception from local audiences.

The user praised the film, saying, ‘It's become very popular in the UK. All my local friends loved it. They have only watched movies like Baahubali. So proud when they talk about Laapata Ladies." Another user added, "That’s good. This movie deserves all the attention.’

‘That’s good. This movie deserves all the attention,’ added another.

‘Laapataa Ladies’, that was released in theatres on March 1, is produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande. The film is adapted from Biplab Goswami’s award-winning novel. Directed by Kiran Rao, it stars Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, and Ravi Kishan in the lead roles.

The story takes viewers back to rural India in 2001, revolving around two brides who get exchanged during a train journey. The plot thickens with twists and turns as their husbands embark on a search for their real brides.

Interestingly, the news of 'Laapataa Ladies' surpassing 'Animal' in viewership comes just weeks after a verbal spat between Kiran Rao and Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Earlier this year, during an interview with The Quint, Kiran declined to comment on Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s films, revealing that she has never actually watched any of his movies.

‘I have never commented on Mr Sandeep’s films because I have never seen them. I have often spoken on misogyny and the representation of women on screen. I have talked about it on various platforms at various times. But I have never taken the name of any film because it is not about the specific film. Why Mr Vanga has assumed that I was talking about his film you’ll have to ask him. I have never seen his film,’ she said.

In an interview, Vanga reacted to Kiran’s criticism and argued that she did not know the difference between stalking and approaching. ‘My AD showed me an article. It is of the second ex-wife of a superstar. She is saying that films like Bahubaali 2 and Kabir Singh promote misogyny and stalking. I think she does not know the difference between stalking and approaching. When people read these things out of context, they tend to agree. This is entirely wrong,’ he said.
