'Gangubai Kathiawadi' title row: Supreme Court suggests name change

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ has landed in a legal soup.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday suggested the makers to change the title of the film.

The suggestion comes in light of the several cases pending before courts seeking to halt the release of Alia Bhatt-starrer.

Among these cases is one by Babu Ravji Shah, the real Gangubai's adopted son. He had alleged that the film is defamatory towards his mother. He has challenged an order from the Bombay High Court, which refused to stay the film's release.

Earlier, Congress MLA also filed a petition to change the film's name, stating that the title maligns the name of Kathiawad city and added that it misrepresents Kamathipura as a red-light area while showing the Kathiawadi community in poor light.

'Gangubai Kathaiwadi' is based on a real-life sex worker who rose to political prominence in the neighbourhood of Kamathipura in Mumbai.

Starring Alia Bhatt as Gangubai, the film will hit the theatres on February 25.
