Deepika Padukone addresses her role as a mother in ‘Kalki 2898 AD’: ‘I thought why not…’

Deepika Padukone addressed her role as a mother in Nag Ashwin’s highly-anticipated film ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, co-starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani.
At the pre-release event in Mumbai, actor Rana Daggubati playfully teased Deepika about her pregnancy, noting that she is still in character while pointing to her baby bump.

Deepika laughed and said, ‘yeah, I worked on it for three years so I thought why not carry the baby bump for a few more months.’

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Deepika Padukone has played a mother with significant impact in a movie. She previously portrayed Ranbir Kapoor’s mother in ‘Brahmastra Part One: Shiva’, the first installment of Ayan Mukerji’s planned Astraverse trilogy. The film also starred Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna Akkineni. The story focuses on Shiva (Ranbir), a young DJ and orphan who discovers he has a special power making him immune to fire.

Last year, Deepika played Shah Rukh Khan’s mother in ‘Jawan’. Shah Rukh appeared in dual roles as Captain Vikram Rathore and his son Azad, while Deepika had a special cameo as Aishwarya, Vikram Rathore’s wife and Azad’s mother. Her performance received much appreciation from the audience. Reflecting on the film, Deepika said, ‘I have no words to say except thank you so much for all the love. I did this for my love for Shah Rukh, and everyone knows the relationship we share. I didn’t expect this to become so special, but I’m just proud and happy to support the team.’

About Kalki 2898 AD

The trailer for ‘Kalki 2898 AD,’ directed by Nag Ashwin, hints at a futuristic take on the Mahabharat, beginning in the resource-rich land of Kaashi, ruled by Saswata Chatterjee’s character, who demands complete loyalty. A prophecy reveals that a child, carried by Deepika Padukone’s character, will overthrow him. To protect his reign, the king places a bounty on her head. Prabhas’ character, Bhairava, a top hunter, believes it is his destiny to capture her, while Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama aims to protect her. The trailer concludes with a glimpse of Kamal Haasan, heightening the anticipation.

The film also stars Disha Patani in a pivotal role.

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is set to release in theatres on June 27.
