Bombay High Court stops ‘Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar’ release following Karan Johar's plea

Bombay High Court has restrained the release of ‘Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar’ and any associated promotional material. The court found a strong prima facie case that the filmmakers had made unauthorized use of Karan Johar's name and persona. The matter has been adjourned to July 10.

Karan Johar filed a plea in the Bombay High Court against the makers of ‘Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar,’ citing the unauthorized use of his name in the film's title.

Johar's team confirmed his legal action, stating, ‘Bollywood director-producer Karan Johar has approached the Bombay High Court against the makers of upcoming Hindi movie Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar, saying they have unlawfully used his name in the title.’

More about the plea

The plea targets the producers of the film, IndiaPride Advisory and Sanjay Singh, as well as writer-director Bablu Singh, for using Karan Johar's name in the title. While the name ‘Karan Johar’ is not directly used in the title ‘Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar,’ it is implied, given the producer's prominence in the media. The plea argues that this has significantly harmed Johar's reputation and standing. The movie was scheduled for release on June 14.

Karan’s work front

On the professional front, Karan is preparing for the release of his upcoming film, ‘Kill.’ The trailer, which was released earlier this week, showcases Lakshya proposing to his girlfriend Tanya Maniktala on a train. However, their romantic journey takes a dark turn when the train is attacked by a group of goons. Raghav Juyal also features in the trailer. Lakshya, described as an ‘extraordinary soldier,’ unleashes a bloody battle to protect his loved ones.

Directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat and produced by Karan Johar, ‘Kill’ premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023 and is set to hit theatres on July 5, 2024. The film has received praise for its gripping action sequences, establishing Lakshya as a rising star in the industry.

Lakshya was initially slated to debut in the shelved romantic comedy ‘Dostana 2’.
