Bhansali Sets the Record Straight: Alia Bhatt-Ranbir Kapoor’s 'Love And War' Is No Sangam Remake

Ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has put the rumours surrounding his upcoming film ‘Love And War’ to rest. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the acclaimed director confirmed that the film, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal, is not a remake of the 1964 classic ‘Sangam’.

‘Why would I remake Sangam? You don’t remake Sholay or Mother India, do you?’ Bhansali quipped, dispelling the speculation. He explained that ‘Love And War’ is a deeply personal project for him, and unlike his past films, it doesn't feature period settings, elaborate costumes, or grandiose sets.

‘It's contemporary, with different music. It's a new territory for me, and I’m loving it,’ he said.

Despite the swirling rumours, Sanjay Leela Bhansali assured fans that Love And War is an entirely original creation, marking his much-anticipated reunion with Ranbir Kapoor after 18 years.

‘It’s exciting to work with Ranbir again,’ Bhansali said.

Their last collaboration was on Saawariya in 2007, and the director is eager to present a fresh side of the actor.

Bhansali also showered praise on his other lead actors. Alia Bhatt, who previously won accolades for Gangubai Kathiawadi, is back, and the director feels there's still much more to explore with her.

‘Alia is a powerhouse. There’s so much left to tap into,’ Bhansali fondly remarked. This will also be Vicky Kaushal's first time working with the celebrated director.

Expressing a deep emotional connection with the cast, Bhansali stressed how important the film is to him. However, he noted the challenging nature of the project and that he is approaching it with care. ‘It’s difficult, so I won’t take my actors or the audience for granted,’ he explained.

Fans will have to be patient, as Love And War is set to release in March 2026.
