Anurag Kashyap reveals he slipped into depression after Netflix shelved 'Maximum City'

Anurag Kashyap has opened up about the impact the shelving of his film 'Maximum City' in 2021 had on his physical and mental health.

Streaming giant Netflix had backed out of the film after Amazon Prime's 'Tandav' was mirred in controversy.

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Kashyap called 'Maximum City' his best work.

“It was my best work. I’ve never done such honest, important work.”
Kashyap called the cautious approavch by streaming platforms post the Tandav controversy a form of invisible censorship

Kashyap added that either his content was sensitive at that time or he had become a sensitive figure for the streaming platform.

Talking about the impact the whole incident left on him, the ‘Kennedy’ director said that he fell into a prolonged state of depression and that he suffered two heart attacks.

He said, “Maximum City was where all my energy went. I was heartbroken. I totally lost it.”

Anurag Kashyap’s latest film Kennedy premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. It starred Sunny Leone and Rahul Bhatt in lead roles.
