Gandhi Jayanti 2022: 5 movies you must watch to remember Gandhiji

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on October 2. Mahatma Gandhi, Father of The Nation, led India's freedom movement along with other prominent leaders against British rule. He has always been one of the most prominent personalities who has been the favourite pick of filmmakers to showcase the freedom struggle of our nation. Many movies have been made or have been inspired by Gandhiji's life.

Here are five movies you must watch to remember Gandhiji.

Gandhi (1982)

The Richard Attenborough directorial starred Ben Kingsley as Mahatma Gandhi. He bagged the Oscar for Best Actor. The film showcases different times of Gandhiji's life from being an advocate till his assassination. This film is considered as one of the best biopics ever made.

The Making of the Mahatma (1996)

Based on the book 'The Apprenticeship of a Mahatma' by Fatima Meer, the film narrates the story Gandhiji's experiences in South Africa and the hardship he faced due to which he went on to lead the freedom struggle of our country. The film is directed by Shyam Benegal and actor Rajit Kapur portrayed the character of Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi, My Father (2007)

The Feroz Abbas Khan directorial showcases the troubled relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his son Harilal Gandhi. Darshan Jariwala portrayed the role of Mahatma Gandhi and Akshaye Khanna, portrayed the role of Gandhi's son. This film was a little different from the other movies as it also depicted key aspects of Mahatma Gandhi's personal life with his family. The film was produced by Anil Kapoor.

Hey Ram (2000)

The film showcases the partition of India and Gandhiji's assassination. Mahatma Gandhi is portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah and Kamal Hasan played the role of Saket Ram, a Hindu fundamentalist. The film was India’s official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category in 2000. The film also stars Shah Rukh Khan. The film was written, directed and produced by Hasan himself.

Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)

The film stars Sanjay Dutt in the lead role of Munna Bhai. Although the film is not based on India's freedom struggle, it promoted the term ‘Gandhigiri’ (Gandhian philosophy) in India, which basically means adapting to non-violent resistance. Actor Dilip Prabhavalkar portrayed the role of Gandhiji.
