A Very Royal Scandal: Inside Prince Andrew’s lonely life as new drama rekindles Jeffrey Epstein sex saga

But the spotlight now shifts to a pivotal moment in his life with the new Prime Video limited series A Very Royal Scandal.

This three-part drama stars Michael Sheen, known for Good Omens, as the Duke of York, and Ruth Wilson as journalist Emily Maitlis.

The series explores the intense public scrutiny Andrew faced following his 2019 Newsnight interview with Maitlis, which ultimately damaged his reputation.

The interview, broadcast to millions, was intended as a defense but backfired spectacularly, adding fuel to the controversy surrounding Andrew’s alleged connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his interactions with Virginia Giuffre.

As the drama unfolds, it reveals how the Duke of York was forced to step back from royal duties.

Sources close to Andrew suggest that he has resigned himself to a life away from the public eye, understanding that a return to royal duties is unlikely.

The new Amazon series follows Netflix’s Scoop, released in March, which featured Rufus Sewell as Andrew and Gillian Anderson as Maitlis.

Despite earlier hopes of a comeback, friends of the Duke revealed that he now accepts his situation, living largely in seclusion at Royal Lodge, with occasional outings for horse rides.

In 2022, Andrew reached a £12 million out-of-court settlement with Virginia Giuffre over a civil claim alleging they had sex three times in 2001.

After Jeffrey Epstein, awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, was found dead in his cell in August 2019, ruled a suicide, Andrew’s public funding for security was cut, He was asked to move from his 30-room mansion to the smaller Frogmore Cottage, previously occupied by Prince Harry and Meghan.

This deepened Andrew’s isolation further.

A close friend of Andrew’s told the Daily Beast that he is deeply depressed about the series and his family is anxious about the portrayal. Despite denying any wrongdoing and never being convicted, Andrew is left wondering how long his punishment will continue. The King has also informed Andrew that his private security will end soon.

A palace insider described the royal family as ‘utterly exasperated’ and unlikely to engage with the new series.
