The India Story | China’s Covid wave: How should India prepare?

China is seeing an unprecedented Covid wave, which has seen hospitals and morgues overwhelmed, and an alleged caseload of 1 million per day. How likely is India to be affected? And how should we prepare?

After China abruptly ended its ‘zero Covid’ policies amid nationwide protests, the country has been caught unprepared. Although data coming from China remains unclear, reports indicate that the country is seeing around 1 million cases and 5,000 deaths per day. By March, it could see more than 4 million cases per day.

The BF.7 Omicron variant has been blamed for this sudden wave of cases. The variant has also led to case surges in countries like the UK, US, France, and Denmark. However, while India remains prepared and vigilant, experts say that there is no reason to panic.

On this week’s episode of The India Story, Vikram Chandra speaks with Dr Arvinder Singh Soin, Chairman, Medanta Liver Transplant Institute, on how likely it is for India to see a surge due to BF.7, and how citizens can keep themselves vigilant.

We also speak to Dr. Li-Meng Yan, Independent Coronavirus Expert, on the possible origins of the current Covid wave in China.
