Tomato Prices Soar to ₹100/kg: What’s Causing the Surge?

Tomato prices have soared to ₹100-120 per kilo due to unseasonal rains and virus attacks. The government steps in, offering tomatoes at ₹65 per kilo in Delhi through mobile vans to control the surge. Will prices stabilize soon?

Tomato Prices Soar to ₹100/kg: What’s Causing the Surge?

Tomatoes – the kitchen essential that just won't stay affordable. Once again, we're seeing a spike in prices, with some markets now selling tomatoes for as much as 100 rupees per kilo. So what's causing this sudden jump

Two big culprits here: unseasonal rains and a virus attack, both disrupting the supply chain. Farmers in Nashik, Maharashtra, a major tomato-growing hub, are really feeling the pinch

According to a report by the Times of India, 20 kg crates of tomatoes are now fetching as much as 1,500 to 1,600 rupees in farm markets there. And this price hike is trickling down to consumers, with retail prices more than doubling to anywhere between 100 and 120 rupees per kilo. Even lower-grade tomatoes aren't spared, selling at 70 to 80 rupees per kilo

Now, it’s not just Nashik that’s facing this issue. Traders in Nagpur, who usually get their supply from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, are reporting a huge drop in supply as well. The daily truckloads of tomatoes have plummeted from 2,000 to just 100

The rains have really messed with this year’s cultivation, but here's the kicker: many farmers already reduced tomato cultivation this season after poor returns last year. It’s a perfect storm of low supply and high demand.

In the face of this price surge, the Central Government is stepping in. In Delhi, tomatoes are now being sold at a subsidized rate of 65 rupees per kilo through mobile vans, courtesy of the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India

Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare launched this initiative to ease the pressure on consumers. By directly procuring tomatoes from local mandis, the government aims to bring down retail prices, while preventing middlemen from cashing in on the crisis.

The Department of Consumer Affairs, meanwhile, believes that tomato prices have surged unnecessarily in recent weeks, pointing fingers at market intermediaries for inflating prices during this festive season, despite a steady supply to the mandis.
