Andhra Pradesh is facing a crippling power crisis as the state has now imposed 50% power cuts on industrial sector as the Andhra Pradesh State Power Transmission Corporation (AP Transco) struggles to meet rising demand amidst soaring temperatures.

After a review of the energy sector the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government announced power cuts industrial sector at least for the next 15 days. This would reduce the pressure on blackouts for domestic and agriculture sector that have also been facing load shedding.

The discoms that are currently facing revenue crunch as well hiked tariff in April by a sharp 60% from 45 paise to Rs 1.57 per unit in six different slabs only for domestic consumption.

Andhra Pradesh is currently facing a deficit of around 40-50 million units per day of power after utilising all the long-term generation resources to meet the daily grid demand.

The crisis is so severe that without prior notice, industries in the state were given a power holiday from Friday, April 8. Industries which operate round-the-clock have been directed to use only 50% of their power requirement. Along with it, all industries should limit their working days to only five days, in view of the crisis, the notification said.
