Benchmark Sensex plunged by 1,018 points to settle a two-week low while Nifty cracked below 23,100 on Tuesday due to across-the-board selling, unabated foreign fund outflows and fresh US tariffs reigniting trade war fears.&nbsp;
Declining for the fifth day running, the 30-share BSE Sensex tanked 1,018.20 points or 1.32 per cent to settle at 76,293.60. During the day, it tumbled 1,281.21 points or 1.65 per cent to 76,030.59.&nbsp;
The NSE Nifty cracked 309.80 points or 1.32 per cent to 23,071.80 with 44 of its constituents closing lower and six with gains.&nbsp;
Realty, industrials, consumer discretionary and capital goods sector shares were major losers as the US confirmed fresh 25 per cent duties on all steel and aluminium imports.&nbsp;
The European Union leaders also vowed a &ldquo;firm&rdquo; response to US tariffs, fanning fears of trade war.&nbsp;
Among 30 Sensex shares, Zomato tanked over 5 per cent. Tata Steel, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Motors, Power Grid, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Hindustan Unilever and ITC were the biggest laggards. Bharti Airtel was the only gainer among Sensex scrips.&nbsp;
In the past five days, the BSE bellwether gauge has slumped 2,290.21 points or 2.91 per cent, while the Nifty tanked 667.45 points or 2.81 per cent. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 2,463.72 crore on Monday, according to exchange data.&nbsp;
"The ongoing uncertainty surrounding US trade policies and tariffs, coupled with domestic economic growth concerns and persistent selling by FIIs, is dampening market sentiment. The mid and smallcap stocks experienced significant declines due to demand concerns and higher valuations," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.&nbsp;
The BSE smallcap gauge plunged 3.40 per cent and midcap index tumbled 2.88 per cent. All BSE sectoral indices ended lower. Realty tanked 3.14 per cent, industrials (2.87 per cent), consumer discretionary (2.73 per cent), capital goods (2.59 per cent), auto (2.49 per cent) and metal (2.23 per cent).&nbsp;
As many as 3,478 stocks declined while 525 advanced and 94 remained unchanged on the BSE. In Asian markets, Shanghai and Hong Kong settled lower while Seoul ended higher.&nbsp;
European markets were trading mostly lower. US markets ended in positive territory on Monday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 1.15 per cent to USD 76.74 a barrel.&nbsp;
The Sensex dropped 548.39 points or 0.70 per cent to settle at a week's low of 77,311.80 on Monday. The Nifty declined 178.35 points or 0.76 per cent to 23,381.60.

The EU has condemned Trump&rsquo;s decision to impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, vowing firm retaliation to protect its economic interests.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen vowed on Tuesday to retaliate firmly against US President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also said the European Union would present a united front and "act together as the largest market in the world".
Trump signed executive orders to impose 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from March 12, despite warnings from Europe and China.
"I deeply regret the US decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminium exports," European Commission president von der Leyen said in a statement.
"Unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered -- they will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures. The EU will act to safeguard its economic interests. We will protect our workers, businesses and consumers," she added.
EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic said it was "a lose&ndash;lose scenario", warning that tariffs were "economically counterproductive".
"By imposing tariffs, the US will be taxing its own citizens, raising costs for its own business, and fuelling inflation," he told the EU parliament in Strasbourg, France.
In one executive order, Trump said: "As of March 12, 2025, all imports of aluminum articles and derivative aluminium articles from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Mexico, EU countries, and the UK shall be subject to the additional ad valorem tariff."
He issued a separate order for steel, which said it would apply to all imports from the same countries the aluminium tariffs hit, as well as to Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
The US president indicated further additional customs duties could be on the way for cars, pharmaceuticals and computer chips.
His latest orders will feel like deja vu for Europe.
In 2018, Trump slapped tariffs during his first presidency on steel and aluminium exports -- forcing the EU to respond with its own higher duties.
The American Chamber of Commerce to the EU also said on Tuesday that it opposed Trump's decision, warning it would "have a wide-reaching and overwhelmingly negative impact on jobs, prosperity and security on both sides of the Atlantic".

Responding to a query from Nadimul Haque, a Member of Parliament from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) representing West Bengal, Sitharaman emphasized the progressive reduction in GST rates. She stated, "Earlier the tax levied on everyday item 15.8 per cent tax could have been levied without additionally burdening the buyer, consumer. If that was the rate at which the GST rates were brought in, today... the rate has come down to 11.3 per cent. That is the level of reduction of rates which have happened in the GST Council."
She further highlighted that GST has not led to increased taxes on any items but has instead resulted in tax reductions for many products.
During the session, MP Haque also inquired whether the government intended to simplify the GST structure by reducing the number of tax slabs, similar to the reforms implemented in income tax.&nbsp;
In response, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary underscored the role of the GST Council, established under Article 279A of the Constitution, as a prime example of cooperative federalism. He explained that all GST-related decisions are made collectively by the Council, which includes finance ministers from all states.
To streamline GST rates, Choudhary stated that a Group of Ministers (GoM) was constituted after the 45th GST Council meeting. Chaired by the Karnataka Finance Minister, the GoM was assigned the task of reviewing and recommending changes to simplify the GST rate structure.
Addressing the issue of GST rate determination, Sitharaman clarified that these decisions are not made unilaterally by the central government. "It is not a singular decision of the Government of India; it has to be a decision of the Council," she said. She further emphasized that state finance ministers are fully empowered to discuss and suggest modifications in GST rates based on their state&rsquo;s requirements, which are then deliberated upon in GST Council meetings.
Sitharaman encouraged states seeking changes in GST rates to approach the GST Council through their respective finance ministers. The Council, comprising representatives from both central and state governments, convenes regularly to review tax policies and implement necessary adjustments to maintain a balanced and equitable taxation system.

The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 86,070 per 10 grams last week.
Gold of 99.5 per cent purity surged by Rs 2,430 to hit a record high of Rs 88,100 per 10 grams in the local markets.
Silver prices increased Rs 1,000 to Rs 97,500 per kg.
Investors are dumping riskier assets like stocks as they prefer safe haven amid global economic uncertainties, traders said.
In futures trade on the MCX, gold contracts for April delivery rallied Rs 940 to hit a new lifetime high of Rs 85,828 per 10 grams.
&ldquo;Gold witnessed strong gains, surging above Rs 85,800 in MCX and hitting USD 2,900 in spot markets as Trump&rsquo;s new round of tariffs on metal products intensified trade war concerns.
&ldquo;With no specific clarity on which countries are included or excluded, uncertainty in global trade has driven significant bullion buying,&rdquo; Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst &ndash; Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said.
The subseqent contract for June delivery surged Rs 1,015 or 1.18 per cent to hit a fresh peak of Rs 86,636 per 10 grams.
Silver futures for March delivery climbed Rs 632 to Rs 95,965 per kg on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX).
Globally, Comex gold futures appreciated by USD 45.09 per ounce or 1.56 per cent to hit a record high of USD 2,932.69 per ounce. Meanwhile, spot gold in the global markets breached the psychological level of USD 2,900-mark.
&ldquo;Gold climbed to a new record high on Monday as fund flow increased towards the safe haven asset in response to President Trump&rsquo;s latest declaration,&rdquo; Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst of Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.
Comex silver futures in the Asian market hours rose nearly 1 per cent to USD 32.76 per ounce.
According to a report by Dutch multinational ING Bank, gold has already hit a series of fresh record highs this year. Tariff concerns that risk higher inflation and slower economic growth are spurring demand for safe haven assets.
The precious metal prices will hit more record highs this year, with USD 3,000 per ounce now in sight, it said.

The stock market closed lower for the sixth straight session as Sensex fell by 122 points and Nifty dipped below 23,000 intra-day before recovering. Foreign investors offloaded ₹4,486 crore amid trade war worries and weak earnings sentiment.

Sensex, Nifty fall for 6th day dragged by FII outflows, trade war fears

The stock market closed lower for the sixth straight session as Sensex fell by 122 points and Nifty dipped below 23,000 intra-day before recovering. Foreign investors offloaded ₹4,486 crore amid trade war worries and weak earnings sentiment.

Stock markets closed lower for the sixth straight day on Wednesday with Sensex falling by 122 points on unabated foreign fund outflows and trade war worries.
The 30-share BSE Sensex, which had tanked more than 900 points intra-day, closed at 76,171.08, down by 122.52 points or 0.16 per cent following a recovery in financial stocks in the last hour.
During the day, the benchmark tanked 905.21 points or 1.18 per cent to sink below the 76,000-level to hit a low of 75,388.39.
The NSE Nifty dipped 26.55 points or 0.12 per cent to 23,045.25, marking its sixth straight day of losses. Intra-day, it tumbled 273.45 points or 1.18 per cent to 22,798.35, falling below the crucial 23,000-mark.
Since February 4, the BSE bellwether gauge has slumped 2,412.73 points or 3.07 per cent, while the Nifty tanked 694 points or 2.92 per cent.
From the 30-share Sensex pack, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, ITC, Power Grid, Reliance Industries, IndusInd Bank, Adani Ports, Titan and Infosys were the biggest laggards.
Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, Larsen &amp; Toubro, UltraTech Cement, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Tata Motors were among the gainers.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 4,486.41 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data.
"The Indian market saw a slight recovery from the sharp intraday declines; however, overall sentiment remained weak due to elevated broader market valuations and muted Q3 earnings growth. Concerns over excessive valuations are expected to sustain the ongoing consolidation phase," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
Additionally, uncertainty regarding the impact of metal tariffs added to market caution, Nair said.
"The upcoming release of US CPI inflation data will provide further market direction," he added.
In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong ended in the positive territory.
European markets were trading higher. US markets ended mostly higher on Tuesday.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude declined 0.78 per cent to USD 76.40 a barrel.
Declining for the fifth day running on Tuesday, the BSE Sensex dropped 1,018.20 points or 1.32 per cent to settle at a two-week low of 76,293.60. The Nifty cracked 309.80 points or 1.32 per cent to 23,071.80.
