Turkiye to Supply Azerbaijani Natural Gas to Syria for Electricity

Ankara, Jul 30 (AP) Turkiye is set to initiate the supply of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Syria to support the country's electricity generation, according to Turkiye's energy minister.

Starting August 2, the natural gas will travel through the Kilis pipeline, crossing Turkiye into Syria, announced Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar in a statement to the state-run Anadolu Agency.

Turkiye, once a staunch supporter of rebel factions against former President Bashar al-Assad, now fosters a supportive relationship with Syria's new government, focusing on stabilization and reconstruction efforts.

Bayraktar revealed that the initial shipment would contain 6 million cubic meters of gas, anticipated to generate around 1,200 megawatts of electricity.

Qatar is contributing financial support for the project, the minister noted.

“The objective is to extend the current daily electricity supply from three to four hours to approximately 10 hours, significantly enhancing living conditions,” Bayraktar explained.

A ceremony featuring ministers from Turkiye, Syria, and Qatar is planned in Kilis on August 2, he mentioned to Anadolu.
