Singapore Immigration Officer Faces Bribery Charges with Sexual Favors

Singapore, Jul 29 (PTI) An officer of Indian origin with Singapore's immigration department has admitted to accepting bribes in the form of sexual favors from six Indian nationals to facilitate their short-term visit pass applications, extending their stay in the city-state, as reported by the media on Tuesday.

Kannan Morice Rajagopal Jayaram, aged 55, and serving as an inspector with Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), committed these offences between 2022 and 2023, according to The Straits Times. He pleaded guilty on Monday to three corruption charges, each involving an Indian national.

Additionally, three similar charges involving Indian men, aged between 25 and 30 years, will be considered during his sentencing, scheduled for August 18, 2025, as per the report. As an ICA inspector, Jayaram was responsible for managing a team that processed visa extension requests.

Court documents reveal that while officers adhered to ICA guidelines, they had the discretion to grant or deny extensions based on individual circumstances.

Jayaram allegedly exploited his position by targeting vulnerable applicants, including a 26-year-old Indian man seeking to stay in Singapore for studies, arranging the man's visa extension in exchange for sexual favors.

He reportedly committed similar acts with six other Indian nationals. Charged in 2023, Jayaram has been suspended from duty since April of the same year, according to ICA.
