New Abbot Shi Yinle Takes Over Iconic Shaolin Temple

Beijing, Jul 29 (PTI) - In an important development at the renowned Shaolin Temple, a new abbot has been appointed following an earlier dismissal related to allegations of misconduct. Shi Yinle, previously the abbot of the White Horse Temple, has taken over as the new head of the iconic Shaolin Temple, which is globally recognized for its profound Buddhist traditions and martial arts legacy.

The temple released a brief statement announcing Shi Yinle's appointment. According to a Tuesday report from the state-run Xinhua news agency, his selection was approved following democratic evaluations by the temple's monastic community, alongside other relevant processes.

The change in leadership follows the removal of Shi Yongxin, who had been at the helm for 25 years. Shi Yongxin, 60, was found to have severely violated Buddhist precepts due to inappropriate relationships with multiple women and fathering illegitimate children, as noted in official media reports on Sunday. He is currently undergoing a joint investigation by multiple authorities.

Established in 495 AD, the Shaolin Temple is situated at the foot of Song Mountain in China's Henan province. It is renowned as the birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu and holds significant religious and historical relevance.

The temple is not only a religious landmark but also a top tourist attraction known worldwide for its association with Chinese martial arts, attracting students from all corners of the globe.
