With large-scale destruction hitting Turkey and Syria after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is ready to offer "all possible assistance" to cope with the tragedy.
PM Modi added that India stands in solidarity with the people of Turkey. The Indian leader said that he was anguished by the loss of lives and damage to property. "Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon," he said.
Meanwhile, the death toll crossed the 560 mark, with both Turkey and Syria reporting over 280 deaths each. The number of casualties is expected to rise further.

The death toll in Turkey and Syria continued to rise rapidly following a devastating earthquake in the early hours of 6 February 2023. The number of casualties crossed 360 by the afternoon, with fears of the toll rising further as search and rescue operations continue. A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit the region, followed by at least 20 aftershocks as strong as 6.6 on the Richter Scale.
In Syria, the confirmed death toll crossed the 280-mark, including casualties in both government-controlled and rebel-held areas. Turkey reported over 70 deaths and injuries to 440 persons.
In Turkey, people trying to leave the quake-stricken regions caused traffic jams, hampering the efforts of emergency teams trying to reach the affected areas. Authorities urged residents not to take to the roads. Mosques around the region were being opened up as a shelter for people unable to return to damaged homes amid temperatures that hovered around freezing.
In Diyarbakir, rescue teams called for silence as they tried to listen for survivors under the wreckage of an 11-story building. Rescue workers pulled out one man, carrying him on a stretcher through a dense crowd of hundreds of people anxiously watching the rescue efforts. A grey-haired woman wailed before being escorted away by a man, while a rescue worker wearing a white helmet tried to calm a crying girl, who was also being cuddled by two friends.
In rebel-held northwest Syria, the opposition's Syrian Civil Defense described the situation as &ldquo;disastrous&rdquo; adding that entire buildings have collapsed and people are trapped under the rubble. In the small Syrian rebel-held town of Azmarin in the mountains by the Turkish border, the bodies of several dead children, wrapped in blankets, were brought to a hospital.
Emergency rooms in the territory were full of injured, said Amjad Rass, president of the Syrian American Medical Society.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered about 33 kilometers (20 miles) from Gaziantep. It was centered 18 kilometers (11 miles) deep.

Hours after news broke on 6 February 2023 of a 7.8-magnitude temblor causing the collapse of multiple buildings, authorities said that more than 90 people had died. Over 50 people were killed in Turkey, while more than 40 died in neighbouring Syria.
The toll is expected to climb higher.

Barman, the general secretary of the upazila&rsquo;s Puja Celebration Council, said some of the idols were destroyed while some were found in pond waters along the temple sites.

The Hindu community leader and union parishad chairman Samar Chattarjee said the region was always known to be an area of excellent interfaith harmony as &ldquo;no such heinous incident took place here in the past&rdquo;. &ldquo;The (majority) Muslim community does not have any dispute with us (Hindus)&hellip; we just cannot understand who could be these culprits,&rdquo; he said.

The earthquake was also felt in Lebanon and Syria. Syria's state media reported that some buildings collapsed in the northern city of Aleppo and the central city of Hama. There was no immediate word on casualties.
In Beirut and Damascus, buildings shook and many people went down to the streets in fear.

Maan said there had been an attempt to mediate between the young woman and her relatives to resolve a "family dispute". The father later surrendered to the police and confessed to murdering his daughter.
On Sunday, security forces prevented some 20 activists from demonstrating outside the country's Supreme Judicial Council, and they gathered instead at a road leading to the building, an AFP journalist said.
Some held placards saying "Stop killing women" and "Tiba's killer must be held to account".

Recordings have been shared on social media by a friend of Ali, and picked up by activists, reportedly of conversations with the father, angry because she was living in Turkey.
In the recordings, she also accuses her brother of sexual harassment.

The explosion took place at Quetta Police Lines Area, and the injured, who are mostly policemen, were shifted to the Civil Hospital in the city. Police officials said the site was cordoned off.
It&rsquo;s not immediately clear the nature of the explosion.
The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack.
It stated that security officials were targeted in the blast.

Subsequently, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla criticised Congress for praising the "architect" of the Kargil conflict, a general who had refused to accept the bodies of his own soldiers. Poonawalla added that Musharraf had called Taliban "brothers" and al-Qaeda terrorist Osama bin Laden a "hero". The BJP leader added that Congress may be fond of Musharraf because the Pakistani leader had called Rahul Gandhi a "gentleman".
Musharraf died in Dubai on 5 February after a prolonged battle with amyloidosis, a rare disease caused by a build-up of an abnormal protein called amyloid in organs and tissues throughout the body.&nbsp;
In a statement issued immediately after Musharraf's death, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan military, said that Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad and all the services chiefs express their heartfelt condolences. "May Allah bless the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family,&rdquo; it said.

Russian envoy admits that ties with India have come under some 'stress'

He said that the mechanism for Rupee-Rouble trade between India and Russia has been established, but added that the Indian banks have been "over-cautious" to use it even though the system is not going to invite any restrictions from the US side.

&nbsp;Russia on Monday said its ties with India are under some "stress" due to the current tectonic geo-political shifts in view of the "arrogant" approach of the US-led West on the Ukraine conflict including its sanction regime against Moscow that caused disruptions in financial and logistics mechanisms.
In his address at a conference, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov also accused the US of "actively" exploiting the "contradictions" between India and China to its advantage and asserted Moscow and New Delhi accumulated mutual trust and confidence based on decades-old ties that would help the two sides to deal with the current geopolitical turbulence.
He said that the mechanism for Rupee-Rouble trade between India and Russia has been established, but added that the Indian banks have been "over-cautious" to use it even though the system is not going to invite any restrictions from the US side.
Alipov also asserted that Moscow will maintain the levels of exports including petroleum products to India notwithstanding the Western price cap on Russian crude oil.
The ambassador said Russia wants to further diversify its relations with India and that bilateral ties are not aimed against anyone but are for meeting the core aspirations of the two nations.
"Today, however, our ties are under stress as we face tectonic geo-political shifts that have been underway for quite some time, but accelerated last year by crossing the red lines in Europe; not by us, but by the so-called collective West led by the US, (which is) by far the most arrogant and belligerent," he said.
Explaining his comments, Alipov said the western sanctions have disrupted the transaction and logistics mechanisms.
"When I spoke about stress, I specifically meant economic relations. The sanctions that interfered... they disrupted the transaction mechanisms and the logistics mechanisms," he said.
"On all these issues, both sides are in very close dialogue. They are very precise and concrete suggestions and a very professional exchange of ideas and proposals from both sides," he said.
On bilateral trade and Western sanctions, he said the Rupee-Rouble mechanism has been established for economic engagement.
"The Vostro accounts have been opened. The mechanism for Rupee-Rouble trade has been established. It is now a matter for the banks to use it," he said.
Alipov said the Indian banks are "over-cautious" to use this Rupee-Rouble mechanism, though it is not going to invite any restrictions from the US. "But that's the fear. The banks would like to be on the safe side. It will take some more time for the knowledge that it is not at all detrimental for the Indian banking system," he added.
The envoy said Moscow wants to expand its economic engagement with Islamabad as a "weak" Pakistan is not good for the entire region including India.
In a tweet later, he clarified that he meant a "destabilised" Pakistan is not in the interest of anyone in the region.
The conference on 'Next Steps in India-Russia Strategic Partnership; Old Friends New Horizons' was organised by the India Writes Network and the Centre for Global India Insights.
Responding to a question, Alipov said Russia would like to see normalisation of India-China relations and that it would hugely benefit the whole world's security and not only Asian security.
"We understand there are very serious impediments to that, a very serious border problem between the two countries. We had a border problem with China, an armed conflict with the Chinese at some stage of the problem, it took us around 40 years to negotiate but ultimately this is the only way to find a solution," he said.
"I am not going to suggest what India or China should do... This is entirely a bilateral matter between India and China and we don't interfere with that.
"But the sooner there is a normalisation between the two countries, the better for the whole world. We will do the utmost to facilitate (that) if our efforts are needed," Alipov said.
Explaining his comments on India-Russia ties coming under "stress", the envoy pointed out the impact of Western sanctions on trade and economic engagement between the two sides.
Alopov said Russia wants to diversify its overall cooperation with India and the ties between the two countries are not directed against anyone.
On Russia's overall ties with India, he said, "Internationally, we have always been on the same page, again something very contrasting with the US approach to India." "Unlike them (the US), we don't need to explain to each other and the world that close partnership between us was not possible in the past for some reason," he said.
Alipov claimed that the approach of the US towards India could change if it finds a new rapprochement with China or New Delhi manages to mend relations with Beijing.
"That, from the US perspective, will be a disaster.
"But from ours, and I believe from India's and China's point of view, it would be the most favourable outcome for the world at large. Any of these scenarios, America's hegemony would suffer," he said.
"That is why it actively exploits the contradictions between India and China to its advantage," he said, adding a new paradigm of democracies versus autocracies is emerging so that the US retains the decisive say amongst its like-minded partners.
Alipov said India and Russia have accumulated a solid experience of "mutual trust, understanding and support" over the last few decades which gives the two sides a sense of confidence in dealing with current geopolitical turbulence.
The ambassador said Russia steadfastly supports India's growing global role and its aspirations to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
"India's significance for Russia as a key international partner is clearly going to grow. Much has been done to solidify our unique and multifaceted special and privileged strategic partnership. There is a rich agenda catering to the requirements of global transformation," he said.
The ties between India and Russia remained strong notwithstanding Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. India's import of Russian crude oil has gone up significantly in the last few months despite increasing disquiet over it in many Western countries.
India has not yet condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and it has been maintaining that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.

Salman Rushdie, the Mumbai-born author of Booker Prize-winning novel 'Midnight&rsquo;s Children&rsquo;, said on Monday that he feels lucky to have survived the last year&rsquo;s brutal stabbing at a literary event in the US as he spoke for the first time about the &ldquo;colossal attack&rdquo;.
The 75-year-old British American novelist was giving a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York &ndash; where he is based &ndash; on August 12 last year when a man stormed the stage and stabbed and punched him several times.
In his first interview since the attack which has caused loss of vision in one eye, the author told &lsquo;The New Yorker&rsquo; magazine that his main feeling was one of gratitude to those who showed their support and his family, including sons Zafar and Milan.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m lucky. What I really want to say is that my main overwhelming feeling is gratitude,&rdquo; Rushdie told the magazine.
"I'm able to get up and walk around. When I say I'm fine, I mean, there are bits of my body that need constant check ups. It was a colossal attack," he said.
Asked if he felt it had been a mistake to let his guard down in New York, years after the fatwa by Iran&rsquo;s former supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini called on Muslims to assassinate the author over the allegedly &ldquo;blasphemous&rdquo; novel &lsquo;The Satanic Verses&rsquo;, he replied: &ldquo;Well, I&rsquo;m asking myself that question, and I don&rsquo;t know the answer to it. I did have more than 20 years of life. So, is that a mistake?" &ldquo;Also, I wrote a lot of books. &lsquo;The Satanic Verses&rsquo; was my fifth published book &mdash; my fourth published novel &mdash; and this [&lsquo;Victory City&rsquo;] is my twenty-first. So, three-quarters of my life as a writer has happened since the fatwa. In a way, you can&rsquo;t regret your life,&rdquo; he added.
The celebrated author told the magazine that he was very moved by the tributes that his near-death inspired and is determined to look forward.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s very nice that everybody was so moved by this, you know? I had never thought about how people would react if I was assassinated, or almost assassinated,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve tried very hard over these years to avoid recrimination and bitterness. I just think it&rsquo;s not a good look. One of the ways I&rsquo;ve dealt with this whole thing is to look forward and not backwards. What happens tomorrow is more important than what happened yesterday,&rdquo; he added.
&ldquo;She kind of took over at a point when I was helpless,&rdquo; he said of his wife, poet and novelist Rachel Eliza Griffiths.
His latest novel, &lsquo;Victory City&rsquo;, completed before the attack, traces back to a trip decades ago to Hampi, the site in Karnataka of the ruins of the medieval Vijayanagara empire.
&ldquo;The first kings of Vijayanagara announced, quite seriously, that they were descended from the moon... It&rsquo;s like saying, &lsquo;I&rsquo;ve descended from the same family as Achilles.&rsquo; Or Agamemnon. And so, I thought, well, if you could say that, I can say anything,&rdquo; the author said.
Rushdie&rsquo;s attacker Hadi Matar is being held in the Chautauqua County Jail in the village of Mayville, charged with attempted murder in the second degree and facing a lengthy prison sentence.&nbsp;

NDRF, medical teams, relief material: India to send aid to earthquake-hit Turkey

Modi's principal secretary P K Mishra held a meeting in the South Block to discuss immediate relief measures and the decision was taken there, an official statement said.

The government on Monday decided to immediately dispatch search and rescue teams of the National Disaster Response Force, medical teams and relief material to earthquake-hit Turkey following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's instructions to offer all possible assistance to the country.
Modi's principal secretary P K Mishra held a meeting in the South Block to discuss immediate relief measures and the decision was taken there, an official statement said.
Two teams of the NDRF comprising 100 personnel with specially trained dog squads and necessary equipment are ready to be flown to the earthquake-hit area for search and rescue operations.
Medical teams are also being readied with trained doctors and paramedics with essential medicines, it said.
Relief material will be dispatched in coordination with the Turkish government and the Indian embassy in Ankara and Consulate General office in Istanbul, it added.
The meeting was attended by cabinet secretary, representatives of ministries of home affairs, defence, external affairs, civil aviation, health and family welfare besides the NDMA and the NDRF, the statement&nbsp;

A massive second 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey on Monday afternoon, according to the US Geological Survey. The second quake came hours after an earlier quake claimed over 1300 lives in the region.
The shallow quake hit at 1:24 pm (1024 GMT) four kilometres (2.5 miles) south-southeast of the town of Ekinozu.
