Lahore, July 16 (PTI) — In the past 24 hours, at least 24 individuals have lost their lives and over 150 have sustained injuries due to rain-related incidents in Punjab province, with the cumulative death toll now reaching 140 across Pakistan this monsoon season, according to an official statement on Wednesday. Intermittent rain persisted throughout the night in Lahore and numerous other districts in Punjab, and officials expect the current weather conditions to prevail until Thursday. “In Lahore, 12 individuals perished in three separate incidents of roof collapse triggered by a thunderstorm during the night, including five from the same family, among them young girls, in the Thokar Niaz Baig area,” stated a spokesperson for Rescue 1122 of Punjab. Three fatalities were reported in Faisalabad, and in Pakpattan, a woman and two children were among those killed. Further, single deaths occurred in Sheikhupura, Bhakkar, Bahawalnagar, and Shahkot due to roof collapses, while two teenagers passed away in Okara. Previously, on Tuesday, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which has been monitoring rain-related incidents, reported 116 deaths since June 26, when the monsoon rains initially struck the country. Of these 116 fatalities, 44 occurred in Punjab, 37 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 18 in Sindh, 16 in Balochistan, and one in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), as per the NDMA.
