Northern lights paint sky red in Bulgaria | Watch

The sky turned red in the eastern European country of Bulgaria as the Northern lights put up a stunning display. The picturesque phenomenon was described as ‘apocalyptic’ by some social media users.

Pictures of the northern lights were also shared from other Balkan nations, including Romania. Reports say green and red auroras were also seen in the United Kingdom.

Northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, have fascinated people from around the world. Many tourists travel to northern Europe to witness the phenomenon.

Canada’s space agency says the colourful display of lights happens when “charged particles (electrons and protons) collide with gases in Earth's upper atmosphere.” These collisions reportedly turn into tiny flashes of light, which happen in quick succession.

The flashes of light can be of different colours, including green, red, blue, purple, pink and dark red.
