Senior Nepali Congress leaders urge the Oli government to expedite constitution amendments for a stronger democratic system, addressing representation issues.

Nepali Congress Urges Expedited Constitution Amendment

Kathmandu, July 22 (PTI) Senior leaders of Nepal's ruling Nepali Congress (NC) have resolved to urge the K P Sharma Oli-led coalition government to expedite the constitution amendment process, aiming to fortify the democratic republic system.

This decision emerged from a meeting on Monday, attended by seven former NC office bearers at the residence of NC leader and Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakash Man Singh in Chaksibari. Senior Nepali Congress leader Bimalendra Nidhi, who also participated in the meeting, emphasized the necessity to advance the agreement on constitution amendments, initially concluded between the ruling Congress and the CPN (UML). "Amending the constitution is crucial for the effective implementation of the federal, democratic republic system and for addressing issues related to the rights and adequate representation of women, backward communities, and marginalized groups," Nidhi explained to PTI. Concerns were raised about the coalition government's lack of initiative in advancing the necessary steps for constitutional amendments to reinforce the democratic republic framework, he added.

The meeting also highlighted the need for the government to operate more effectively, aligning with the interests of the people and the spirit of the ruling alliance. Discussions extended to the country's current political climate, the government’s performance, the party’s internal dynamics, and strategies to boost the party’s standing among the public, Nidhi further noted. In addition to Prakash Man Singh, other senior NC leaders present at the meeting included Krishna Sitaula, Gopalman Shrestha, Bijay Kumar Gachhadar, Shashank Koirala, and Prakash Sharan Mahat. As more than a decade has passed since the enactment of the new constitution, essential amendments are deemed necessary to address the weaknesses and shortcomings observed in its implementation, Nidhi pointed out.
