Joe Biden confuses rugby team with ex-UK military unit used against Irish forces

US President Joe Biden found himself in another 'slip of the tongue' moment during his visit to Ireland on April 12 when he confused the New Zealand rugby team 'All Blacks' with 'Blacks and Tans', a name given to the group of soldiers who fought against the Irish forces during the war of independence.

The US president was paying a tribute to Irish rugby player Rob Kearney, who was also his fifth cousin.

'He was a hell of a rugby player and he beat the hell out of the Black and Tans,' Biden said instead of naming the New Zealand rugby team All Blacks.

The White House issued a statement saying it was "very clear" to Irish rugby fans that Joe Biden was referring to the All Blacks New Zealand team when he mistakenly referenced "the Black and Tans". It also corrected the transcript of his speech to say 'All Blacks'.
