After weeks of comparative quiet, protests reportedly broke out in multiple Iran cities on the intervening night of 16 and 17 February 2023.

Protestors marched on streets of various cities, 40 days after the Iranian government executed two men on charges related to earlier demonstrations. Videos on social media showed protests in Iran's capital Tehran, and places like Arak, Isfahan, Izeh, Karaj, and Sanandaj, according to reports.

Demonstrators in Tehran were allegedly heard shouting slogans like "Death to the Dictator" - a reference to the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The protests began in September 2022 after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was allegedly killed by the country's morality police for not wearing her hijab, or head scarf, as per law.
