Monsoon Rains Cause Deadly Flood in Nepal's Rasuwa District

Kathmandu, July 9 (PTI) At least nine individuals have lost their lives, and 20 remain missing following the devastating effects of monsoon rains that caused a flood in the Rasuwa district of Nepal. This calamity also resulted in the destruction of the "Friendship Bridge," a vital link between Nepal and China.

The deluge was triggered Monday night due to continuous monsoon downpours in China, which caused the Bhotekoshi River in Nepal to overflow.

The swift currents of the river tragically claimed the lives of at least nine people. Their bodies were found miles away in the downstream regions of the Dhading and Chitwan districts, as reported by the Republica newspaper.

In the early hours of Tuesday, around 3:15 am, the Miteri Bridge in the Rasuwa district, located 120 km northeast of Kathmandu, was swept away by the floodwaters. Among the 20 people who are still unaccounted for, three are security personnel, and six are Chinese nationals.

A considerable number of rescuers are already on-site attempting to manage the catastrophe.

The flood also inflicted damage on four hydropower projects within the district, significantly influencing the supply of at least 211 MW of electricity to Nepal's national power grid. Additionally, the raging river carried away 23 cargo containers, six freight trucks, and 35 electric vehicles.
