Clashes Erupt in Lahore: TLP Protest Turns Violent

Lahore, Oct 9 (PTI) – Violent confrontations erupted between law enforcement officials and members of a radical Islamist party, Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), in the city of Lahore, Pakistan, over an anti-Israel protest, police reported on Thursday. Following the TLP's announcement to stage an anti-Israel demonstration outside the US embassy in Islamabad on Friday, Punjab police conducted a raid at the TLP headquarters to arrest its leader, Saad Hussain Rizvi. Violence ensued late Wednesday night as the police launched the crackdown, leaving dozens injured. A police officer stated, "At least five officers and over a dozen TLP workers sustained injuries in the clashes that lasted for several hours." The TLP, however, claimed that one of its members was killed and 20 were injured. The officer explained that during the raid to execute an arrest warrant against Rizvi at the TLP headquarters in Yateem Khana, Lahore, the police were met with resistance. TLP workers retaliated by attacking the police with stones and iron rods. Despite the efforts, Rizvi managed to evade capture. A significant police presence remains deployed around the TLP headquarters as tension persists in the area. The Punjab government is considering deploying paramilitary Rangers to prevent further conflict. "Religious party workers typically do not attack Rangers personnel," the officer noted. Meanwhile, a TLP spokesperson condemned the crackdown, alleging that at least one worker was killed and 20 others were injured. They criticized the Punjab government under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, accusing them of employing oppressive tactics to thwart the planned 'Labbaik Ya Aqsa Million March'. The spokesperson declared the arrests and raids as disgraceful acts against unarmed TLP members, emphasizing the solidarity of Muslims with Palestinians in Gaza. Following the arrest of the TLP’s deputy chief, Pir Syed Zaheer-ul-Hassan Shah, the spokesperson warned that the government's actions were fueling public unrest and that the voice of truth would not be silenced by force.
