Afghan Collaborators Resettled in UK After Data Breach

Thousands of Afghans relocated to the UK after a 2022 data breach exposed their identities. Initially covered by a super injunction, the resettlement programme was publicly announced after its relaxation, mitigating concerns of Taliban retaliation.

Afghan Collaborators Resettled in UK After Data Breach

London, July 15 (AP) Thousands of Afghans, once collaborators with British forces, have quietly found new beginnings in the UK, following the unauthorized disclosure of their identities that heightened concerns of Taliban retaliation.

The British government unveiled the resettlement initiative on Tuesday.

In 2022, a data breach revealed the personal details of nearly 19,000 Afghans who had sought refuge in Britain after the Taliban's takeover. Portions of this sensitive information were subsequently published online.

This breach spurred the then-Conservative government to initiate a clandestine resettlement scheme for those affected. To maintain the programme's secrecy, authorities secured a super injunction— a stringent court order preventing any disclosure of its existence.

The injunction was relaxed on Tuesday, and the current Labour Party government announced the programme publicly. An independent investigation has reportedly found minimal evidence suggesting that the data leak significantly increased the danger of Taliban retribution for these Afghans.
