Several people in West Bengal and the northeast, including Kolkata and Assam&rsquo;s Guwahati, were seen coming out on the streets as a precautionary measure.
There was no immediate report of any loss of life or damage to property, officials said.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday termed the NDA win in Bihar as a vote for pro-people governance and vowed to throw out 'jungle raj' from West Bengal, saying the BJP's victory march will follow the flow of river Ganga from Bihar to Bengal.
Addressing a thanksgiving function at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Modi also set sights on other poll-bound states, saying the massive victory in Bihar has infused fresh energy in party workers of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Assam and West Bengal where elections are due next year.
"The victory in Bihar has paved the way for the BJP's triumph in Bengal. I want to assure the people of West Bengal that, with your support, the BJP will put an end to the jungle raj in the state as well," he said.
The prime minister greeted party workers at the BJP headquarters here by waving the 'gamchha', the ubiquitous long cotton scarf worn by most people in Bihar and other eastern states amid chants of 'Modi-Modi' and 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'.
As a symbolic gesture to connect with the people of Bihar on the occasion, PM Modi wore a 'gamchha' with Mithila painting on it and began his speech with chants of "Chhathi Maiyya ki Jai".
"The people of Bihar, with this massive victory and their unshakable confidence, have taken the state by storm ('garda uda diya')," said Modi in typical Bihar lingo.
He termed the victory in Bihar as a mandate for politics of good governance and hailed the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the contribution of all NDA leaders including Chirag Paswan, Jitan Ram Manjhi and Upendra Kushwaha.
"If the people are re-electing the BJP-led NDA government, it signifies the establishment of a pro-people, pro-governance and pro-development agenda. This represents a new foundation in Indian politics," the prime minister said.
The BJP-led NDA was on course for a landslide victory in the Bihar assembly elections with well over two-thirds majority in the 243-member House.
"Today's victory is the beginning of a new journey. The trust that Bihar has reposed in us has put greater responsibility on our shoulders," he said.
The prime minister assured the voters of Bihar that the state will progress at an even faster pace, new industries will be established and the youth will get jobs within the state.
"Investment will come to Bihar, and this investment will bring more jobs. Tourism will expand in Bihar, and people will see Bihar's new strength. Our pilgrimage sites, places of faith and historical heritage will be rejuvenated," he said.
The prime minister said the victory has given a new "M-Y -- Mahila and Youth" formula as the people had destroyed the "communal 'M-Y' formula of the jungle raj people".
"Bihar has shown again that lies are defeated and people's trust wins," Modi said.
This victory has strengthened people's confidence in the Election Commission, the prime minister said.
In an apparent reference to the Muslim-Yadav (M-Y) support base of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Modi said in Bihar, some parties had formulated an "M-Y formula" but today's victory has given a new "positive M-Y -- Mahila and Youth" formula.
"Today, Bihar is among the states with a high youth population, and these youths belong to all religions and castes. Their wishes, aspirations and their dreams have destroyed the communal M-Y formula of the jungle raj people," Modi said in a swipe at the Opposition.
He said the Bihar polls have also shown that the voters, especially the young ones, take the purification of the electoral list seriously.
The youth of Bihar have also extended tremendous support to the revision of electoral rolls, he said.
Modi hailed the Election Commission for ensuring that elections take place smoothly and recalled how violence was the norm during the 'jungle raj', an apparent reference to RJD rule during the chief ministership of Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi.
His remarks come at a time when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been alleging "vote chori" in state polls and accusing the EC of colluding with the BJP to ensure the party's victory.
Modi said with the new government, the NDA was now moving forward towards a golden journey of 25 years in Bihar.
"Bihar has ensured that the return of jungle raj will never happen again in this great land. Today's victory belongs to those sisters and daughters of Bihar who endured the terror of jungle raj during RJD's rule," he said.
The prime minister said the victory belonged to the youth of Bihar whose future was ruined due to the terror of Congress and those waving the red flag.
"Today's verdict is a mandate to the politics of development and rejection of the politics of nepotism," Modi said.
"When I used to speak about jungle raj and 'katta sarkar' (rule by country-made pistol), the RJD party raised no objections. However, it unsettled the Congress. Today, I want to reiterate that 'katta sarkar' will never return to Bihar," the prime minister said.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls commenced in West Bengal on Tuesday, with booth-level officers (BLOs) visiting voters' residences and distributing enumeration forms to them, an EC official said.
Altogether, 80,681 BLOs have been deployed to conduct the exercise, he said.
"Overall, 7.66 crore enumeration forms have so far been prepared for the 294 assembly constituencies in the state, and each voter will get two forms. BLO would countersign both forms. The officer would retain one form for the Election Commission of India and return the second with a stamped acknowledgement, which may be required for future reference," one of the officials said while elaborating on the process.
No untoward incident has been reported since the house-to-house distribution of enumeration forms started this morning, he said.
"We are hopeful that the process will proceed smoothly across the state," the official told PTI.
SIR-related help desks have also been opened at the offices of the DEOs across West Bengal.
This month-long process of house-to-house enumeration will continue till December 4, and the draft rolls will be published on December 9. Claims and objections can be raised from December 9 to January 8. Notices will be issued, and hearings and verifications will take place between December 9 and January 31.
The final electoral rolls will be published on February 7.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, set to begin in West Bengal on Tuesday, has snowballed into a political flashpoint, with the BJP and the Election Commission touting it as a bid to ensure transparency and the TMC gearing up for a grassroots showdown ahead of the 2026 assembly polls.
The voters' list revision would commence after a similar exercise was conducted in the state in 2002. While the BJP has welcomed the SIR as a step towards ensuring greater transparency in the electoral rolls, the ruling TMC has questioned its timing and intent, alleging that the Election Commission (EC) is acting under pressure from the saffron party to manipulate the voter list ahead of the state elections next year.
With both parties treating the SIR as a prelude to the 2026 Assembly elections, the contest has morphed into what many in political circles describe as "the battle of two forces, the administrative and the organisational".
The BJP, buoyed by the Election Commission's "proactive stance" and the possibility of central deployment, is pinning hopes on what it calls a "cleansing" of West Bengal's voter list.
The TMC, meanwhile, has activated its battle-hardened booth network, determined to ensure that no "genuine voter" is struck off the rolls.
The exercise, involving house-to-house verification by booth level officers (BLOs) from November 4 to December 4, has already turned into a flashpoint.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a rally in Kolkata on Tuesday to protest what her party calls a "politically motivated revision" aimed at disenfranchising minorities and marginalised groups.
Her nephew and TMC's national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, has called for "man-marking" of BLOs and directed the appointment of booth level agents (BLAs) across all 84,000 booths to monitor every step of the process.
In a virtual meeting with TMC leaders on Friday, Abhishek instructed that BLOs be "kept under constant watch" and that party agents accompany them during fieldwork to prevent "arbitrary deletions".
He has also ordered the setting up of war rooms in every assembly constituency, complete with data teams and communication links to coordinate the exercise. He has said that the next six months will be the "acid test" for the party's organisational machinery.
Despite the urgency, EC data till October 30 show the TMC trailing its rivals in appointing BLAs. The BJP has deployed 294 BLA-1s and 7,912 BLA-2s, while the CPI(M) has appointed 143 and 6,175, respectively.
The TMC has so far managed only 36 BLA-1s and 2,349 BLA-2s, though party insiders insist the shortfall will be bridged by Monday.
The BJP has accused the ruling party of inflating the voter rolls. Citing administrative inputs, the saffron camp claims that over 40 lakh "duplicate or fake" names existed in Bengal's rolls during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and expects the SIR to strike off at least a crore names.
"Those who thrived on ghost voters and bogus ballots are panicking," BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya claimed.
TMC leaders have responded with equally sharp warnings. Barrackpore MP Partha Bhowmik recently said that if even one "genuine voter's name" was deleted, "local BJP leaders will not be allowed to step out of their homes."
Abhishek Banerjee has threatened to bring "one lakh people from Bengal" to the EC office in Delhi if voter names are arbitrarily removed.
The BJP counters that the TMC's so-called "booth muscle" thrives under the protection of a pliant police force.
Amid this charged backdrop, the poll panel has trained over 80,000 BLOs and issued a 16-point guideline along with a mobile app to streamline operations. Training for BLAs, the party representatives who will shadow the BLOs, ends on November 3.
Yet the training has not been without hiccups. Teachers deputed as BLOs have protested being marked "absent" in school registers during training. Many have demanded central security for both training and fieldwork, citing threats and political intimidation.
"We are being sent to volatile areas without protection," a teacher said in the North 24 Parganas district.
The TMC has alleged that four people have died by suicide, fearing the loss of their voting rights, while another is hospitalised after consuming poison.
The BJP has rubbished the claims as "manufactured melodrama".
Observers see the unfolding tension as a continuation of West Bengal's political pattern, a contest not merely for votes, but for control. In both the 2021 Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP relied heavily on central forces, while the TMC drew strength from its disciplined booth machinery. The results went the TMC's way both times.
"Bengal's politics has always been fought at the booth level. The SIR will test not only the integrity of the voter list but also the resilience of these two armies, one administrative, one organisational," said a Kolkata-based political scientist.
The enumeration phase will be followed by publication of the draft rolls on December 9. Objections can be filed till January 8, with the final voter list set for release on February 7, just two months before the 2026 Assembly elections expected in April-May.
As Bengal&rsquo;s politics shifts from big rallies to door-to-door visits, the focus has turned to the voter list itself. In this SIR exercise, the real battle is between who gets included or left out of the rolls, because every single name could make a difference in the final count.

The toll in the devastating landslides in West Bengal's Darjeeling district rose to 24, as disaster management personnel continued the rescue operation on Monday with several people still missing and thousands of tourists stranded in cut-off hill pockets, officials said.
North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha said the toll rose with the recovery of one more body late Sunday night.
"The situation remains extremely challenging. Several people are still missing, and the toll is likely to go up. Continuous rainfall is hampering the rescue operations," he told PTI.
The landslides, triggered by over 300 mm of rain in just 12 hours, have ravaged the Darjeeling hills and the Dooars region at the foothills, officials said.
Among the worst-affected areas are Mirik, Sukhiapokhri and Jorebunglow in Darjeeling, and Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri district, they said.
The rescue operations, led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were continuing across multiple sites, with heavy earth-moving machinery being used to locate people feared trapped under mounds of debris, they added.
"Clearing operations are underway at more than 40 landslide points. Our teams are working around the clock to reopen the Mirik-Darjeeling and Sukhiapokhri roads," an official said.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit the affected areas later in the day.
The district administration has set up relief camps in coordination with the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and local NGOs, an official said.
"Food, blankets, medicines, and drinking water are being provided to all displaced families," he said.
An official of the GTA, the semi-autonomous body that administers the Darjeeling hills, said road connectivity to several hamlets remained severed even 24 hours after the disaster.
"Entire slopes have caved in, bridges washed away, and large portions of roads are buried under mud. Helicopter sorties may be needed to reach some interior villages," he said.
Hundreds of visitors who had travelled to the hills for Durga Puja vacations remained stranded as the arterial roads to Siliguri at the foothills were blocked.
Efforts are being made to help them reach Siliguri in batches via alternative routes, an official said.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall may continue in the region till Tuesday morning, with an alert issued for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar districts, an IMD official said.
"Given the saturated soil and ongoing rain, the risk of fresh landslides remains high," he said.&nbsp;

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the downpour as "unprecedented", lashing out at poor dredging of the Farakka barrage and lapses by private power utility CESC, while appealing to people to stay indoors for their own safety.
"I have never seen rain like this. I feel so bad for the people who have lost their lives in the cloudburst. I heard 7&ndash;8 people have died due to electrocution by open or unattended wires. It is so unfortunate&hellip; Their families must all be given jobs by the CESC. I am saying this clearly. We will also do whatever is possible to help," Banerjee told a Bengali news channel.
Heavy overnight rains brought Kolkata to its knees on Tuesday as the city was preparing for its biggest festival, Durga Puja, which will begin later this week.
Squarely blaming the utility, she said, "Electricity is supplied by CESC, not us. It is their duty to ensure people do not suffer because of this. They will do business here, but not modernise here? They should send people to the field and fix this." "Even our houses are submerged; we are all suffering. I am feeling so bad for the Pujo pandals as well. Schools have been asked to declare holidays and office-goers advised to stay home today and tomorrow," the chief minister said, adding she was in constant touch with the Mayor, Chief Secretary and police.
Those who lost their lives were identified as Firoz Ali Khan (50) of Beniapukur, Pranatosh Kundu (62) of Netaji Nagar, and Mumtaz Bibi (70) of Ekbalpur, besides an unidentified person in Gariahat.
Kolkata Mayor and state Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said, "So far, we have received information of four deaths due to electrocution in different places in the city, but later official tallies placed the figure at seven. Hakim said that most parts of the city were waterlogged and teams of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) were working round the clock to drain out water.
He said KMC officers are working hard. But the canals and rivers are full of water and every time water is drained out, more is getting inside the city.
"We fear that the high tide which is around 1.30 PM today, may not help in our efforts to drain out the excessive water. It would be around 10 PM when the situation could be expected to improve," Hakim said.
Across the city, vehicles lay stranded on arterial roads, commuters waded through waist-deep water at several intersections, and Metro services were suspended on a long stretch of the Blue Line.
Traffic movement was severely affected at key intersections such as Park Circus, Gariahat, Behala and College Street, while long snarls were reported on EM Bypass, AJC Bose Road and Central Avenue. Several smaller lanes in south and central Kolkata were completely cut off.
Commuters complained of buses breaking down mid-way, while taxis and app cabs either stayed off the roads or charged exorbitant fares. Many schools declared a holiday as students and staff could not make their way through flooded streets. Calcutta University and Jadavpur University also suspended all academic activities for the day.
Office-goers faced severe hardships due to lack of public transport and traffic snarls. Train and Metro Railway services were badly hit. Significant waterlogging was reported in the mid-section of the Blue Line (Dakshineswar&ndash;Shahid Khudiram), particularly between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar stations, prompting suspension of services on this stretch.
A Metro spokesperson said services were suspended between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations since morning hours. "Truncated services are being run between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations," the official said, adding that normal services were expected to resume soon.
Eastern Railway authorities said train movement in the Sealdah south section had been suspended owing to waterlogged tracks, while skeletal services were being run in the Sealdah north and main sections.
Trains to and from Howrah and Kolkata terminal stations were partially affected, while Circular Railway services were suspended due to waterlogging at Chitpur yard.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal was likely to bring more heavy rain in several south Bengal districts.
The intensity of the downpour was higher in the southern and eastern parts of Kolkata, the KMC said. Garia Kamdahari recorded 332 mm of rainfall in just a few hours, followed by Jodhpur Park (285 mm), Kalighat (280 mm), Topsia (275 mm) and Ballygunge (264 mm). Thantania in north Kolkata received 195 mm.
The weather office warned of heavy rainfall continuing in Purba and Paschim Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram and Bankura districts till Wednesday. It added that another fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around September 25.&nbsp;

TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has branded the proposed law as "autocratic", a step "more than a super-Emergency" that will "finish" the independence of the judiciary.
"I am eager to be among @BJP4Bengal Karyakartas at a rally in Kolkata. With each passing day, public anger against the TMC is increasing. West Bengal is eagerly looking towards the BJP with hope because of our development agenda," Narendra Modi posted on X on Thursday.
In another post, the Prime Minister said, "It is always a delight to be among the people of Kolkata, a city whose development we are greatly committed to. Tomorrow's programmes in the city are mainly focussed on connectivity. The metro services, which will be flagged off, include Noapara-Jai Hind Bimanbandar, Sealdah-Esplanade and Beleghata-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay routes. Connectivity to and from the airport as well as the IT hub areas will be enhanced." The chief minister has decided to skip the inauguration of the three new Kolkata Metro stretches that the Prime Minister will unveil.
"The decision was taken in the backdrop of harassment faced by migrants from West Bengal in several BJP-ruled states," a senior TMC leader said.
Against this backdrop, the BJP expects the Prime Minister to use his West Bengal visit to sharpen the party's counter-narrative -- projecting development and infrastructure growth in contrast to what it calls the TMC's "politics of appeasement and identity mobilisation".
Banerjee and her party have in recent weeks accused BJP-ruled states such as Assam, Odisha, Delhi, Maharashtra and Gujarat of detaining and profiling Bengali-speaking migrants, alleging that they are being branded "illegal Bangladeshis".
PM Modi will inaugurate a 13.61 km-long metro network in Kolkata, marking the first time in 41 years that the city's metro services will directly connect the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport with the rest of the city.
Kolkata is set for a historic leap in public transport, with these three new metro stretches rolling out, which will drastically slash travel time, including cutting a 50-minute road journey to 11 minutes and the airport commute to just 30 minutes.
In addition, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of a 7.2 km six-lane elevated Kona Expressway project worth over Rs 1,200 crore. The group had entered India two years ago and was staying in Ahmedabad. They were caught when they were trying to return to Bangladesh through the border in Nadia, the officer said.
A case was registered at the Dhantala police station.

At the outset, the bench took note of the submissions of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the state government, and said, &ldquo;This is surprising. How can the High Court pass such an order? Reservation is part of the executive function."&nbsp;
The state had prepared the new list after the high court, in May 2024, quashed the inclusion of as many as 77 communities in the OBC list.

A TMC activist was allegedly hacked to death by unidentified miscreants at Bharatpur in West Bengal&rsquo;s Murshidabad district, a senior police officer said on Thursday.
Sasthi Ghosh was returning home on Wednesday night when he was accosted by the assailants who &ldquo;repeatedly attacked him with a sharp tool&rdquo;, the officer said.
Ghosh, who was lying in a pool of blood on the street, was taken to a local hospital where doctors declared him brought-dead, he said.
The reason behind the killing could be personal enmity over property matters, but the exact motive will be known following an investigation, he said.
Search is underway to trace the accused.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased claimed that Ghosh was murdered for being associated with the TMC.
In another incident, the nephew of a panchayat member was allegedly hacked to death at Madhusudanpur in Kakdwip area of South 24 Parganas district on Wednesday, police said.
The body of the youth was found in an open field hours after he left home, they said.
Police have started an investigation into the incident.

As part of the day's events, the PM laid the foundation stone for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited&rsquo;s (BPCL) Rs 1,950-crore City Gas Distribution project in Bankura and Purulia districts. The project aims to supply piped natural gas (PNG) to households and industries, compressed natural gas (CNG) at retail outlets, and generate employment in the region.
He also dedicated to the nation the Rs 1,190-crore Durgapur&ndash;Kolkata section (132 km) of the Durgapur&ndash;Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline, laid under the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG) initiative. In a major boost to road infrastructure in the region, he will lay the foundation stone for 4-laning of Ara bypass of NH-319 that connects Ara-Mohania NH-319 and Patna-Buxar NH-922 providing seamless connectivity and reducing travel time.
Besides several other rail projects, Modi will inaugurate New Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) facility at Darbhanga and state-of-the-art incubation facility of STPI at Patna for promoting IT/ITES/ESDM Industry and start ups.

The three prime accused -- alumnus and contractual staff Monojit Mishra, current students Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed -- and security guard Pinaki Banerjee were taken to the college around 4.30 am and it took around four hours to complete the process.
"The reconstruction of the crime scene is a vital part of the investigation. We completed the task today. The four accused persons were taken to the South Calcutta Law College early this morning, and the task is done," the officer told PTI.
The entire reconstruction process, carried out in the presence of a huge police team, lasted for four hours, following which the four were taken back to the police station.
"Our findings will now be cross-checked with the allegation of the woman and verified with other evidence," the officer added.
The security guard is scheduled to be produced in court later in the day as his police remand was until June 4.
The alleged rape of the 24-year-old woman was led by Mishra, and assisted by two college seniors on the evening of June 25. The crime took place for over three hours at multiple locations inside the campus, including the guard's room, the victim said in her complaint with the police.
The investigation is currently being carried out by the Detective Department of the Kolkata Police.
The medical examination, as well as, the circumstantial evidence corroborated the first-year student's allegation of being gang-raped.
The security guard was accused of failing to carry out his responsibilities.

Prasad served as the national returning officer for the election of the West Bengal BJP president.

Allowing the center to continue its inquiry into the allegations of irregularities in some districts of the state, a division bench presided over by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam directed that the scheme be implemented prospectively with effect from August 1.
The court directed that the authorities in charge of the implementation of the scheme are entitled to impose special conditions to ensure that whatever had occurred three years prior should not recur.
The court said that it is not in dispute that certain irregularities have been pointed out by the Centre in the disbursement of wages under the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) scheme.
The bench, also comprising Justice Chaitali Chatterjee (Das), noted that with regard to allegations of irregularities, action has been initiated, recoveries made and that such amount is being maintained in a bank account of the state nodal agency of MGNREGS, West Bengal.
The division bench said that at this juncture, the endeavour of the court is to ensure implementation of the scheme, which has been kept in abeyance for the past close to three years in the state.
The court said that no one can allow a person who illegally took advantage of the scheme to go scot-free.
"At this juncture, the court is concerned about the implementation of the scheme in West Bengal prospectively," the bench observed.
"The scheme of the Act does not envisage a situation where the scheme would be put to cold storage for eternity," it said.
The bench said that the Centre has sufficient powers to inquire into irregularities or illegalities in the manner of disbursement of the wages.
The court said that there can, however, be a line drawn between past actions and future steps to be taken to implement the scheme.
It said that this would be "in public interest" and subserve the object and purpose for which the central law was enacted.
