West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said tea of cheaper quality from Nepal was entering the state and affecting the state's renowned 'Darjeeling' variety.
She questioned why tea importers from the neighbouring country were given tax-free benefits while the state government had to cough up a tariff of 40 per cent and directed Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to write a strong letter to the Centre.
"We are facing a serious problem. Tea from Nepal is coming here. It is coming at a very cheap price because they do not have to pay any tax... and we have to pay a tax of 40 per cent. This is getting mixed up in our tea, affecting the quality. I will tell the Labour department to highlight this. They are mixing it with Darjeeling tea and deteriorating the quality. I will ask the chief secretary to write a strong letter to the Centre," Banerjee said.
The Bengal CM, who was addressing an administrative review meeting here, also urged officials to install machines on the borders of the state with Nepal to keep a check on tea imported from the neighbouring country.
"We are not against any country. But the Centre cannot do it. We have to pay tax, and they (Tea traders from Nepal) will have to pay no tax. This is wrong. They cannot brand their tea as Darjeeling tea. Install machines in the bordering areas to keep a check on this," she said.
Talking about river erosion in Malda, Banerjee said the Union government has "stopped" releasing funds despite her government sending a proposal of Rs 1,064 crore. She said that 1,800 hectares of land were eaten up by erosion, and the state has spent several crores to address the issue.
She directed the chief secretary to visit New Delhi for a meeting with officials of the Union government in this connection.
She also alleged that the Farakka Barrage, which was entrusted with the responsibility to look into the matter of erosion, has done nothing, and on the contrary, the condition of the roads has deteriorated.
"River erosion in Malda has been a big issue. But those who were responsible for looking after it have done nothing. Nearly 1,800 hectares of land have gone into the rivers. We had given a proposal of Rs 1,064 crore to the Centre, but nothing happened," she said.
The state spent Rs 466 crore, and there are works for another 21 projects at an expense of Rs 225 crore, and work for another Rs 11 crore will start soon.
"Earlier, the Farakka Barrage had a total area of 180 km to maintain, but that has come down to 20 km now. But the condition of roads and other facilities has deteriorated in such a manner that nothing could be done. So, I think the chief secretary should go to Delhi and place it in detail to the Centre," she said.
Banerjee asked Health department officials to ask pharmacists to put advertisements on fake medicines.
"There are several drugs that have been banned. Are you checking whether they are being used in the hospitals or not? Are you checking the expiry dates of drugs stored in the stores? You conduct surprise visits to different stores. Ask all the shops to put up notice on fake medicines ...," she said.
Banerjee also said that doctors at government hospitals "should not prescribe these medicines".
"Recently, we have issued an advertisement in this regard. Keep photos of that advertisement in your phone and check that whenever you are at any medicine shop," she added.
During the meeting, Banerjee sounded a warning for a senior police officer of Cooch Behar Police District over an alleged issue of "lobbying" within the department.
"There is some DSP or SDPO in the Cooch Behar headquarters... Despite being in the headquarters, he is not being given work. He is not allowed to work. If you (the police) form lobbies within yourselves, how will the people sustain them? Involve him in duties in areas like Sitalkuchi, Dinhata and border regions," she said.
"How can someone deployed in the headquarters not be involved in duties despite wanting to work? What is this? Police do not form groups among themselves. Political people do that more&hellip; all this time, that is what we knew," she said.

The prices of top quality Darjeeling tea have shot up by 10-15% this season, reported The Economic Times. This comes as the hills which are usually covered with a mist, experience a six month long dry spell that almost halved the crop size from last year.
<h3>Darjeeling tea prices shoot up</h3>
The Economic Times quoted Tea planters and said that the unusually long period without rainfall has affected the production and the quality of the premium first flush teas that come to the market in April-May.
"Tea estates have reported 40-50% drop in first flush teas, which is the biggest revenue earner for the Darjeeling tea industry," Girish Sarda, co-owner of the 92-year-old Darjeeling's Nathmulls Tea told The Economic Times.
"The quantity of good first flush teas has been affected due to the prolonged dry spell that started in November," he added
The report further mentioned that the tea that were selling at Rs 1,700 per kg last year are now selling at Rs 1,900-2,000 per kg. The Economic Times further quoted Sarda and said that the high quality first flush teas that are priced between Rs 3,944 per kg and Rs 53,586 per kg are usually bought by high end customers. However, such sales are very small in quantity.
In 2022, Darjeeling tea production was at 6.93 million KG which dwindled to 6.18 million KG in 2023. The Economic Times quoted Industry insiders and said that the tea garden and their profitablility saw a big impact due to the violent agitations in the hills in 2017 and recent resurgence in the demand for Gorkhaland ahead of the ongoing elections.
The report further mentioned that foreign buyers are missing this year as they are preferring Nepal tea over Darjeeling as the former is much cheaper and has almost the same flavour as Darjeeling tea.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, chairman of Indian Tea Exporters' Association Anshuman Kanoria has said that the April crop production is likely to be behind by 25% to 35%
"As banjhi (bud dormancy in tea bushes) has started setting in, crop prospects do not look good, and the April crop is likely to be behind by 25% to 35%," said Anshuman Kanoria told The Economic Times.
"The crop shortage, coupled with increased costs and soft demand, has further increased the challenge of survival on already struggling Darjeeling tea estates," Kanoria added.&nbsp;

Mahajan highlighted that excessive sugar in tea leads to weight gain. "One teaspoon has 19 calories, while one tablespoon packs 48 calories. Despite the 20-calorie difference per cup seeming small, consider the extra empty calories from each teaspoon," Mahajan advised. She also recommended limiting daily added sugar to 10 grams.
She cautioned against consuming these items daily due to their negative impact on overall health and nutritional balance. "These accompaniments are not only high in calories but also contain palm oil, refined flour, sugar, and trans fats."

The statement further said that the "unthinkable notion of adding salt to Britain's national drink is not official United States policy. And never will be." The tweet also said Americans will continue to make tea by microwaving it.
The UK government wrote in reply, "We appreciate our Special Relationship, however, we must disagree wholeheartedly... Tea must only be made using a kettle."
In Britain, tea is usually made in a kettle, something that is not as popular in the States.

First, let&rsquo;s understand the difference between stroke, dementia and post-stroke dementia. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States, a stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain gets blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, the affected parts of the brain get damaged or wither away. Dementia, on the other hand, is a general term for symptoms related to declining brain function. Post-stroke dementia is a condition where symptoms of dementia occur after a stroke.
The study
Researchers at&nbsp;Tianjin Medical University in China studied 365,682 participants from the UK Biobank who were recruited between 2006 and 2010 and followed until 2020. At the outset participants self-reported their coffee and tea intake. Over the study period, 5,079 participants developed dementia and 10,053 experienced at least one stroke.

<li>Those who drank 3-5 cups of coffee or tea per day had the lowest incidence of stroke or dementia</li>
<li>Those who drank 2-3 cups per day were at a 32% lower risk compared with those who drank neither coffee nor tea</li>

Massive Bike Rally Demanding ST Status

The All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU) had organised a massive bike rally to reiterate their demand for ST status for the Tai Ahom people and six other communities of Assam. The bike rally was organised by the Dibrugarh unit of ATASU. The rally was from Moran to Dibrugarh.
